ANNUAL REPORT 2011
Andrew Carnegie
"It will be found that Dubuque has been
exceedingly fortunate in the establishment of
her free library. She was very fortunate in
having a good friend in the east willing to
furnish a beautiful home for the Library. She is
fortunate again in having a generous - hearted,
liberal - minded, citizen of her own able and
willing to supplement the gift of the building
with the gift of a large, suitable and desirable
lot whereon to place the building."
Telegraph Herald, February 1901
"... Notify the gentleman [Andrew
Carnegie] who proposed to give to the
City of Dubuque $50,000 for the
erection of a library building ... Pay
the said $50,000 to the Treasurer of
said City of Dubuque to be deposited
in the library funds ... for the purposes
of erecting a substantial fire proof
home for such free public library, and
for no other purpose." C.H. Berg,
Mayor, November 30, 1900
