She was very fortunate in having a good friend in the east willing to furnish a beautiful home for the Library. She is fortunate again in having a generous - hearted, liberal - minded, citizen of her own able and willing to supplement the gift of the building with the gift of a large, suitable and desirable lot whereon to place the building." Telegraph Herald, February 1901 "... Notify the gentleman [Andrew Carnegie] who proposed to give to the City of Dubuque $50,000 for the erection of a library building ... Pay the said $50,000 to the Treasurer of said City of Dubuque to be deposited in the library funds ... for the purposes of erecting a substantial fire proof home for such free public library, and for no other purpose."
