The idea of the downtown/urban center as the
life-blood of the community is slowly growing
across the country. With rising fuel costs and
an increasing awareness of the environmental
impact of suburban sprawl, cities of all sizes
are revitalizing and reviving their downtown
areas; bringing together commerce, creativity,
and community in an effort to capitalize on
their local assets and emphasize their
unique character.

This project harnesses the ability graphic art
has to influence people's perceptions, creating a
new visual narrative for Dubuque's Historic Mill-
work District. Utilizing environmental graphics,
in the form of 50 individually designed banners,
Faces will alter the urban landscape end
highlight the district's powerful sense of pie cc
while giving it a decidedly modern feel.

Your role, as designer, is to create work that
embellishes and modernizes the district's
historic patina, prompting people to think
about the interplay between architecture,
people, and place. Your banner will be installed
on one of the iconic buildings in this district,
becoming, for one year, a part of the facade
or face of the district.
Following the environmental exhibition, the
banners used in the project will be up-cycled
into a variety of usable boutique objects:
messenger bags, tablet cases, computer sleeves,
wallets, etc. These products will be available
for sale, allowing people to own a piece of the
project and transitioning the project
narrative from macro to micro.
