Architectural Style And Key Stylistic Elements:
Classical Revival style, two-story frame cubic hip core, gablet and offset front gable roof dormer/wing,
corner porch and balcony, ornate oriole in front, side wing. Interior features French doors, frescoes
around ceilings, 1869 baby grand piano left with house, key building.
Physical Description:
T-plan, 29x28, center wing to front, saw-tooth wood shingle, balcony, nice vertical brackets, original
porch, well preserved chimney cap.

8. Narrative Statement of Significance:
Historical Notes:
The present owners (Randy and Chris Nauman) date this house to 1907 and identify its builders as
Jacob and Mary Wellhoefer. That same family owned the lot when it was sewered in 1891. Joseph A.
and Margaret Travis are the first known occupants and it is possible that they did not own it and the
Wellhoefer’s did. The appearance of the same address in 1899 strongly indicates that the actual
building date was c.1898 and not 1907.
Converted into a duplex in mid-1950s, converted by third owner, widow Mildred Lang, same until 1988
when purchased by Rev. Clifford (Jean) Close, who convert back to single-family. Randy and Kris
Nauman buy December 1898 and start restoration (Annual Dubuque Fest House Tour, May 16-16,
1993; Telegraph-Herald, February 28, 1997).
Jack Wellhaefer owns when sewered 1891.

Historical Image Notes:
The 1909 Sanborn map shows the house as 356 Hill, T-plan with right-side bay, east side porch, and
centered rear wing, rear sheds on alley. There was a rear north-facing side porch.
The 1909/36 Sanborn map shows the same, and adds a garage in the northeast corner of the lot.
