Van Milligen MCVM:sv Attachment cc: Barry Lindahl, City Attorney Cindy Steinhauser, Assistant City Manager Cori Burbach, Sustainable Community Coordinator Masterpiece on the Mississippi TO Michael Van Milligen, City Manager FROM Cori Burbach, Sustainable Community Coordinator DATE March 9, 2012 SUBJECT University of Iowa Sustainable Dubuque Partnership Work Session Dubuque had NI- America City 'I 1 1 I' 2007 INTRODUCTION The purpose of this memo is to request Council set a work session for Tuesday, May 8 at 5 30 p m to hear presentations from the students participating in the University of Iowa Iowa Initiative for Sustainable Communities partnership with Sustainable Dubuque BACKGROUND In March 2011, Council approved a partnership with the Unwersity of Iowa Iowa Initiative for Sustainable Communities in which the second -year Masters in Urban and Regional Planning students would complete year -long capstone projects in Dubuque, working with various Sustainable Dubuque partners The projects chosen for the 2011 -2012 academic school year include the following 1 Sustainable Dubuque Indicators 2 Renewable Energy Asset Mapping 3 Portrait of Poverty 4 Local Foods in Dubuque Institutions 5 Green &Healthy Homes The students have met with local partners, conducted public outreach in a variety of forms, collected data about Dubuque, and researched other communities and national best practices They will be meeting with local project partners between now and May 8 to discuss the final recommendations of their projects, and would like to hold a work session with Council on May 8 to present their findings All project partners as well as the public will be invited to attend as well ACTION TO BE TAKEN I respectfully request that Council seta work session to hear the presentations from the University of Iowa students on Tuesday, May 8 at 5 30 p m in the Council Chambers of the Historic Federal Building If there is a conflict in this date, I request the work session be set for Thursday, May 10 at 5 30 p m to accommodate the students' finals week schedules cc Dave Lyons, Smarter Sustainable Dubuque Project Manager Eric Dregne, Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque Charles Connerly, University of Iowa
