Van Milligen, City Manager SUBJECT: Comiskey Park Tennis Court/Skate Park Project Sealed bids were received for the Comiskey Park Tennis Court/Skate Park Project. Leisure Services Manager Gil Spence recommends award of the contract to the low bidder, Drew Cook & Sons Excavating, in the amount of $84,211.25, which is 29.56% over the engineer's estimate of $65,000. This contract would leave $18,376 for contingency and to replace the fence. Replacement of the lights will need to be re-budgeted. It should be noted that the present lights will be removed under this contract. Van Milligen, City Manager ~., SUBJECT: Comiskey Park Tennis Court/Skate Park Project INTRODUCTION The purpose of this memorandum is to recommend that the City Council award a contract to Drew Cook & Sons Excavating in the amount of $84,211.25, for construction of the new tennis court and skate park in Comiskey Park. DISCUSSION On July 5, 2005 bids were received for construction of a new tennis court and 60' x 60' skate park in Comiskey Park. A summary of the bids received is as follows: Drew Cook & Sons Excavating Portzen Construction Fondell Excavating BASE BID $84,211.25 $91,338.75 $99,290.00 The engineer's estimate for the project was $65,000. The FY 2006 C.I.P. budget contains $97,600 to replace the tennis courts. Separate projects to landscape ($40,000) and replace the lights in the basketball and tennis courts ($35,500) were budgeted prior to FY 2006. Through meetings with the Northend Neighborhood Association and survey of the neighborhood, it was decided to landscape the park, replace one tennis court, add a small skate park designed for beginners, asphalt overlay the basketball courts, and install new lights on the tennis court and basketball courts. more Comiskey Park, page two RECOMMENDATION I recommend that a contract be awarded to Drew Cook & Sons Excavating in the amount of $84,211.25 for construction of a new tennis court and skate park in Comiskey Park. WHEREAS, said sealed proposals were opened and read on the 5th day of July, 2005, and it has been determined that the bid of Drew Cook & Sons Excavating in the amount of $84,211.25 was the lowest bid for the furnishings of all labor and materials and performing the work as provided for in the plans and specifications. NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA: That the contract for the above improvement be awarded to Drew Cook & Sons Excavating, and the Manager be and is hereby directed to execute a contract on behalf of the City of Dubuque for the complete performance of the work.
