Library Board of Trustees Update

Present: Paula Connors, President; Mike Willis, Vice President; Frederick
Miller, Secretary; Trustees, John Anderson - Bricker, Diann Guns, and David
Hammer

• Sandy Dixon, Assistant State Librarian, presented a continuing education
session on "Trustee Essentials" that included "Top Five Things Every
Library Trustee Should Know" and the roles of trustees.
• 58 percent of the fiscal year lapsed with expenditures at 61 percent and
revenues at 63.5 percent of projected income.
• Visits and check out of library materials continue increasing with both up
10 percent over the previous year. This is at a time when most libraries
around the state are experiencing about a one percent increase in
business.
• Two DRA grants have been prepared on behalf of the Friends of the
Library and the Library Foundation. The Foundation is supporting
Freegal, which is a new service offering music that can be downloaded
from the library's website. The Friends of the Library are supporting an
upgraded telephone notification system that allows for text messaging and
greater flexibility in types of messages sent.
• Bill Wilson of Himmel & Wilson met with a Board subcommittee and
Library Director regarding the library's community survey that is being
done to determine satisfaction, level of interest in west side service, and in
keeping with requirements for accreditation. Funding of the survey is from
a gift trust and not from the operating budget.
• LEED certification was filed on February 15. The next step is review by
the U.S. Green Building Council that will advise us if more information is
required. This will take place over the next four to six weeks.
• Discussion took place on the challenges faced in the allocation of the
materials budget to adequately meet the demand for non -print material.
Staff will present additional information to the board on the topic of
eBooks, DVDs, and print material in upcoming Board meetings.
