Van Milligen, City Man;gy) Gus Psihoyos, City Engineer ~-: TO: SUBJECT: Additional Parking Meters INTRODUCTION The Engineering, Parking, and Transit Departments have been reviewing the possible addition of parking meters in the downtown area. DISCUSSION The Transit Department has identified a portion of Main Street between 9th and 10th Streets and a portion of 9th Street east of Locust Street as areas previously used for bus-loading that are no longer needed. It has been determined that four metered stalls could be added to the west side of Main Street immediately south of 10th Street and three metered stalls could be added to the south side of 9th Street immediately east of Locust Street. In addition, Engineering has determined that the existing left-turn lane pavement markings on 1 ih Street are no longer necessary. Recent traffic counts indicate low turning volumes from the left-turn lanes; and therefore, the markings could be removed. Parking on 1ih Street is currently prohibited in certain sections between Central Avenue and Main Street to accommodate the turn lanes. It has been determined that nine metered stalls could be added to 1 ih Street if the left-turn lanes were removed and a centerline was painted in the middle of the street. , RECOMMENDATION I would recommend that the City Council adopt the attached ordinances that allow parking on certain portions of Main Street, Ninth Street, and 1 ih Street to allow for the addition of parking meters. ACTION TO BE TAKEN The City Council is requested to adopt the attached ordinances.
