ARTS AND CULTURAL AFFAIRS ADVISORY
COMMISSION
REGULAR SESSION (Goal Setting)
Tuesday, June 28, 2005, 4:00 p.m.
Board Room, Carnegie Stout Public Library
360 W. 11th Street, Dubuque, Iowa
The meeting was called to order at 4:10 p.m. following staff assurance of compliance
with the Iowa Open Meeting Law.
Commissioners Present: Jane Kenworthy, William Intriligator, Amy Weber, Paul Kohl,
Mark Wahlert, Sue Reidel, Rebecca Fabricius.
Staff Present: Cindy Steinhauser, Jerelyn O'Connor.
The Commission reviewed the mission statement and goals of the Commission.
The Commission then identified what this means to each of them. The following
areas were identified:
1. Diversity - Who, what, where, social/economic, age, mediums, physical ability.
2. Building community among diverse populations using the arts.
3. Linkages to educational system.
4. Advocacy
5. Community awareness about what "arts' includes and how we experience it.
6. Brand Dubuque as an arts and cultural hub - regional, tri-state area.
7. Build community among arts and cultural organizations.
8. Visibility and accountability of Commission to citizens and City Council (individual
fiscal responsibility).
9. Developing marketing and promotional information - access to the arts.
The Commission identified action points toward implementation.

· Compile Dubuque art resources and share information with citizens, state,
and city.

· Reporting - Return on investment (ROI) with programs and funding
- Annual report on grant funding award.
· News releases, grant recognition in grantees' materials (logo)
. Use of City Focus, Channel 8, website
· Work with City Council to create "award ceremonies" for recipients
· Interview grantees for Channel 8 and participants
Approval of Minutes: Motion by Intrilligator, second by Wahlert to approve minutes of
the May 24,2005 meeting. All approved.
Election of Officers: Both Mark Wahlert and Sue Riedel expressed interest in
assuming position of Chair. Paul Kohl suggested that the commission adopt process of
having the Vice-Chair assume the position of Chair the following year. There was
general consensus to approve this process. Motion by Intrilligator, second by Weber to
nominate Wahlert as Chair, Riedel as Vice-Chair. All Approved. Motion by Wahlert,
second by Intrilligator to nominate Weber as Secretary. All approved.
Next Meeting: Tuesday, July 26 at 4:30 p.m., Library Board Room
O'Connor asked whether the Commission would like to use the next meeting to
prioritize results of this meeting's goal setting and also asked Commission's approval to
invite a representative of the Dubuque Community School District to discuss the plans
for the Arts focus of the new Downtown Elementary School. All agreed.
