TRAVEL & DIVERSITY:
I have traveled to thirty-two countries-many in Africa, Asia
and areas that are diverse as well as those that are
culturally significant. I believe that this experience makes
for a more tolerant person. I would like to see Dubuque take
full advantage of the diversity within our city limits. I would
like to engage the young citizens in cultural and artistic
endeavors, as well as Hispanic and Afro-American and other
cultural groups.
I am very sensitive and have worked with the Indian
residents to help introduce their culture to the community
through food and entertainment.
The arts and culture are part and parcel of who I am. It
remains the most important part of my life aside from my
family and friends.
I would be an excellent member of this commission. I am a
great committee person who would listen in a non-partison
manor. I am creative in planning and also I get things
accomplished.

To: Selection Committee
This communication is intended as a letter of recommendation for Ms. Ellen Henkels who is applying for a
position on the Arts and Cultural Affairs Commission - City of Dubuque. The contents and statements contained
herein, are based on observable behaviors during her course of duties as a Art teacher at Jefferson Junior High
School.
On the basis of these observable behaviors, I would offer the following comments:
~ Ellen has a strong commitment to the Arts.
~ Ellen is an integral part of our Jefferson staff. Her assignment includes varied responsibilities,
including students with a wide range of physical, emotional and mental limitations and capacities.
~ Ellen demonstrates her commitment to the Arts through numerous contributions. These include:
. Set displays for our drama presentation;
· Art displays for our building, our school partners and the community;
· Her commitment to a personal art show at the Rocco Buda Art Center
· City-wide art exhibit at the Dubuque Museum of Art featuring art work from Jefferson
students.
. Membership in various art organizations.
~ Personal characteristics include:
~ Ellen is a quality person, a people person, and very professional.
~ Ellen is extremely reliable and dependable - not a clock watcher.
~ Ellen exhibits excellent communication skills - excellent rapport with students, parents, faculty
and staff.
~ Ellen is committed to providing meaningful art instruction, with appropriate ties to other
curricular areas and the real world, for all students.
~ Ellen has willingly taken on additional responsibilities. Included among these are: planning
committee for the new middle school, business partnership representative, etc
I would heartily endorse the appointment of Ellen as a viable candidate for this commission.
Should any additional information be desired, please feel free to give me a call (563.588.8360).
