Library Board of Trustees Update
From the Meeting of
July 28. 2005
. Minutes of the May meeting were reviewed and approved; no minutes were taken from
the June meeting due to lack of quorum.
. Alan Avery was voted Library Board President, Sue Lindsay, Vice-President and Kristen
Smith, Secretary. Committees: Relations, Michael Shubatt and Sue Lindsay; Planning,
Diann Guns and board member to be appointed; Operations, Kristen Smith and Beverly
Kolz.
. A review of security was noted. A study was written including an overview of the
history of security in the library, discussion of an increase in the level of incidents and a
review of the last six months; security in similar-size Iowa libraries was presented as well
as a discussion of the current situation and recommendations. (copy available upon
request) This topic will be covered in a future meeting when the Library has a full board.
. Friends of the Library will hold their annual book sale on Friday, September 30 from
3 :00 to 7:00 and on Saturday, October 1 from 10:00 to 3 :00. Permission granted for the
Carnegie half of the Library to remain open until 7:00 for the sale.
. Personnel update: Michael May has been hired as the new Librarian in Adult Services.
Michael and his family will move from Appleton, WI where he is currently working in
the library at Lawrence College. Betsy Killins has been hired as a part-time Library
Assistant in Circulation. Betsy grew up in South America and speaks fluent Spanish. She
resides in Dubuque after attending Emmaus Bible College. Tom Resnick has been
promoted to part-time Library Aide in the Children's Department. Tom has worked at
the Library for the past three years. Sherry Ewert has announced her retirement effective
August 20; Sherry has worked at the Library for 25 years.
. With 100% of the fiscal year lapsed, the Library came in at 98% of the budget. Revenue
was at 109% of budget.
. The exterior maintenance project and landscaping project have been completed. The
original door on Bluff Street has been removed for repair and restoration. The Old House
Enthusiasts have donated the funds for this project.
. Approval was authorized to move to the next design stage of the Library's renovation
plan. Henricks will contact OPN Architects.
. Henricks will participate with other department managers in a goal setting session on
August 1 and 2.
. At the end of the fiscal year the Library realized increases in most areas of service.
Circulation was up 7%. This comes at a time when circulations in Iowa are flat, and
nationwide they are up 1- 2%. Most of the circulation increase was to Dubuque
residents. Second in contributing to the increase were the communities participating in
the 28E Agency Agreement for library service. Funding from the Agency is partially
based on circulation so it is expected that we will realize an increase in revenue. Audio-
Visual materials continue to enjoy high growth; DVD circulation was up 71 % from last
year. This summer promises to be the busiest ever with one day in June registering 1,871
visitors in an 8-hour period. Internet use was up 9% over the previous year logging a
total of 87,207 visits. Meeting room use increased 1 0%. Volunteer hours donated
increased and the Library realized the equivalent of two additional FTE for the year as a
result. The Library web site visits from the outside have increased 23%. Library
databases have also enjoyed growth in number of times they have been accessed.

From Patron Comment Cards:
"We love your place."
"My granddaughter is enjoying the summer reading program Dragons, Deeds, and Daring
Deeds. The parking however is a big challenge! I wish the city would address this concern.
The elderly and physically challenged must have a difficult time!"
"I think it would be in the best interest of the Library, as well as the City of Dubuque, to paint
cross walks at the corner crossings to and from the Library. I have often times almost been
hit and I also see a lot of young children crossing the streets. A cross walk would help insure
everyone's safety."
"I did not get a chance to fill our the evaluation sheet after the performance so I wanted to tell
someone at the library that my wife and I really enjoyed the program. I have attended others
and continue to like what you are doing. All of the people in attendance were responsive and
appreciative of such fine entertainment, especially since it was free. In reading about Lance
Brown and his shows, the library was lucky to acquire such talent and offer it to the citizens.
Thanks again."
