Iowa Earth Year 2000
October 27, 1999
Dear Mayor,
Something exciting is happening throughout Iowa next year, and I want your community to
be a part of it. Join with other Iowa communities to celebrate Iowa EarthYear 2000, one of
the largest environmental celebrations in the nation! Your community should be represented
and involved. To secure your community's place in this celebration, I am asking you to
appoint two EarthYear Ambassadors to serve as liaisons and to represent your community by
attending a kick-off conference Friday, January 21 , 2000, in Des Moines.
The concept of Iowa EarthYear 2000 originated to commemorate the 30th anniversary of
Earth Day and mark the end of one century and millennium and the dawning of a new one.
Iowa EarthYear 2000 hopes to involve ALL Iowans in promoting a statewide, yearlong
celebration of environmental stewardship focusing on the future of Iowa's land. Becoming
involved means your community will not only benefit by having a positive impact in your own
backyard, but you'll be part of a larger effort to preserve and maintain the beauty of Iowa.
The appointment of two EarthYear Ambassadors is only the beginning of your partnership
with Iowa EarthYear 2000. By attending the January 21 conference, your Ambassadors will
bring advantages to your community, not the least of which is the chance to win one of
several financial scholarships (some as large as $1,000) to support an EarthYear activity of
your choice. Ambassadors will also bring back valuable information and resources from the
January kick-off that will help your community sponsor a successful project.
Your timely response to this request is critical to the success of Iowa EarthYear 2000.
Please complete the enclosed Ambassador appointment form and return it by fax to
(515) 281-8895 no later than November 22. Also, if you have any questions about Iowa
EarthYear 2000, feel free to contact the EarthYear 2000 coordinator at e-mail address
ey2000@max.state.ia.us.
Sincerely,
Governor Thomas J. Vilsack
