MEMORANDUM
November 30, 1999
TO: Michael C. Van Milligen, City Manager
FROM: Gil D. Spence, leisure Services Manager
SUBJECT: Town Clock Plaza 18th Street Snow Removal
INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this memorandum is to request approval to purchase some new
equipment to remove snow from the new brick pavers on 8th Street on Town Clock
Plaza.
DISCUSSION
The design team for the newly constructed 8th Street and renovation of Town
Clock Plaza have provided recommendations for the procedures to use for snow
removal. These recommendations include:
· Snow plows should not be used on the brick pavers. A rotating broom mounted
on a small articulated tractor is the recommended method.
· Magnesium Chloride is the recommended de-icer to be used.
· Use of a skid loader is not recommended because skid marks may result.
Park Division Manager John Hail has been researching costs for equipment we will
need because we do not have a broom method available. We first considered
purchasing a garden tractor with broom, blower and blade, at an estimated cost of
$12,500 but becme concerned that traction would not be good enough without the
use of chains on the wheels. John talked with people at loras and Clarke Colleges
about what they use, and was told they mount a broom on a four-wheel drive
mower and it works great.
page two
We already have the mower we would need, so would only need to purchase a
broom and a weather enclosure. The estimated cost for both items is $4,800.
This appears to be the best solution and I would like approval to proceed with the
purchase of the equipment. The broom will take one to three weeks for delivery so
I would appreciate a response as soon as possible.
ACTION STEP
The action requested is approval to purchase a rotating broom and weather
enclosure at an estimated cost of $4,800 to mount on a four-wheel drive mower
we already have.
