MEMORANDUM
August 17, 2005
TO: Michael C. Van Milligen, City Manager
FROM: E. Daniel Brown, Fire Chief ~ DR
SUBJECT: 1948 Antique Fire Truck
This is an update on the progress for the restoration of the 1948 Seagraves Tiller Truck.
I have been working with Jim Weitz who represents the Antique Fire Club on getting
their 501 C-3 not for profit status. Mr. Weitz had to submit some paperwork to update
the incorporation for the club and then we can proceed with the filing of the 501 C-3.
The Antique Fire Club is still in existence and still maintains the ownership of the ladder
truck. Mr. Weitz has been maintaining the insurance on the truck.
Mr. Weitz, Jim Simon from Simon Fire Equipment, Dave Schuster and myself went out
to look at the truck and have Mr. Simon give us an estimate of what it will cost to restore
it in a like-new condition. Mr. Simon indicated that the truck would have to be
dismantled; all the parts sand blasted and painted and the chrome work would have to
be redone. The truck would require new tires, hydraulic brake system
upgrade/replacement, electrical wiring and the drive train needs to be inspected in order
for this to be street worthy. His estimate for this would be in the neighborhood of
$100,000. He has done similar restoration of smaller trucks that was in the $60-70,000
range. His time estimate for completion would be in the 3-4 year range. His main focus
for his business is the building of new fire apparatus. This estimate cost did not include
the issue involving the motor and its condition; he said this would be greatly depended
on what he found after they removed the motor and tore it down. Mr. Simon indicated
he would be willing to work on the truck as he had time available and would not require
any payment until it was completed and delivered.
My recommendation is to proceed with the fundraising through the Antique Fire Club
and we can research further the restoration of this truck. The time frame would
probably be realistic with regards to the fund raising and the ability to store the vehicle
after it is completed in the new fire station on the west end.
