To the Honorable Mayor, City Council Members and City Manager,
I was recently in Dubuque to attend the Diamond Jubilee of one of my cousins at Mt. St. Francis. There
were several other cousins present who still live in Dubuque along with out of town visiting family
members. Travelling with me were my sister and her son who were last in town 10 years ago for our
grandmother's funeral. We showed him around Dubuque seeing both the old and the new. We were all
very impressed with the new harbor attractions.
Yet there was a definite emptiness as we approached were my grandmother's house used to be at 30
Fremont. It was the site of so many of my childhood memories and a place of much love. Also it was
the home for over 50 years of Auleen and Tony Eberhardt and their sons and foster child. It was also
where the Catholic Mother's Study Club originated along with numerous published works including
Aunt Minnie, the Pastor's Housekeeper, daily articles destined for the Telegraph Herald and the
DesMoinesRegister. She was a very positive, influential force in the city while she lived and even after
being forced out of her home for the expansion of Dodge St.
Shortly after she died, I wrote to the then mayor about the possibility of an honorary street sign for
Auleen. Sadly, the idea was turned down. I write again to encourage you to consider this. This is not a
request to change the name of Fremont, but to add an honorary name to the same street sign. You can
see many other locations throughout the United States that do this. Typically the honorary sign hangs
below the given street sign name and is on a different color backing. I know for a fact that there are
other people in town deserving of such recognition as well, both living and deceased.
I would hope that most of you would agree with me that is the people of a place that give it its character
and make it most interesting. I think that Dubuque needs to be active in creating a sense of history
and pride in who its residents are and were. This is another way to celebrate its uniqueness.
I look forward to hearing your response via email.mail or phone, 773-743-5539.
Sincerely,
Marianne Eberhardt
