The 2005 Phoenix Award winners represent outstanding brownfield projects from each of the 10 US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regions. The Port of Dubuque project was awarded the 2005 Phoenix Award for EPA Region 7, which includes Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska. The application was submitted by the City of Dubuque and its environmental project engineer, Terracon Consulting Engineers and Scientists of Bettendorf, Iowa. "The Phoenix Award is very prestigious award and is quite appropriate considering the transformation that the Port of Dubuque area has undergone," said City Manager Mike Van Milligen. "This is the preeminent brownfield redevelopment award in the country and we are honored to be competing for the grand prize." The 2005 winners are: Region 1: Save the Bay Project, Providence, Rhode Island Region 2: Rheingold Brewery Redevelopment Project, Brooklyn, New York Region 3: Chester Waterfront Redevelopment Project, Chester, Pennsylvania Region 4: Johnnie Ruth-Clarke Health Center, St. Petersburg, Florida Region 5: Phalen Corridor, St. Paul, Minnesota Region 6: Pinnacle Park Redevelopment Park, Dallas, Texas Region 7: Port of Dubuque, Dubuque, Iowa Region 8: Platt River Commons & Salt Creek Heights Business Center, Casper, Wyoming Region 9: Petco Park & The East Village Redevelopment Project, San Diego, California Region 10: Rainier Court, Seattle, Washington Community Impact Winner: Mountain Pine Pressure Treating Site, Plainview, Arkansas Communitv Impact Winner: Chesterfield Square, Los Angeles, California Community Impact -- UST Winner: Rosalia Visitor Resource & Interpretive Center, Rosalia, Washington Community Impact - Mine Scarred Lands Award Winner: AMD&ART Project, Vintondale, Pennsylvania (MORE) PORT OF DUBUQUE RECEIVES PHOENIX AWARD (Page 2 of 2) Phoenix Award project participants will be honored at an awards ceremony during the Brownfields 2005 conference in Denver, Colorado, November 2-4, 2005. Winners will showcase their projects with case study presentations and exhibits during this environmental conference which is expected to draw 4,000 participants. The Phoenix Awards™ Grand Prize, the Regional Awards and the Community Impact Prizes, and the People's Choice Award will be presented during a special plenary ceremony. The People's Choice Award is presented to the project that receives the most votes from conference attendees, based upon the case study presentations. Created in 1997, this prestigious award honors individuals and groups who are working to solve the critical environmental challenge of transforming abandoned industrial areas into productive new uses. The Phoenix Awards™ are widely recognized as the outstanding award for achievement of excellence in Brownfield redevelopment, and often are called "the Brownfields equivalent of Hollywood's Oscar." For the first time this year, awards are being presented for Community Impact - USTs (underground storage tank cleanup projects) and Community Impact - Mine Scarred Lands. In addition, two general Community Impact Award winners were honored. Award included environmental improvement and long-term community economic benefits with particular emphasis on: 1) magnitude of the problems and project, 2) use of innovative techniques, 3) cooperative efforts of multiple parties to undertake the project, including financing solutions, 4) positive impact on the environmental (e.g., green buildings, greenways, energy use) and 5) project's general and long-term economic impacts on the community. An independent panel of state, regional and federal government leaders, along with environmental, business and academic professionals selected the winners. Evaluations were based on responses to specific questions related to the project's overall effectiveness, use of innovative environmental solutions and impact on the environment and local economy. The Phoenix Awards™ were created and are coordinated by Denise K.
