Minutes Arts & Cultural Affairs Adv. 8 18 05 MINUTES ARTS AND CULTURAL AFFAIRS ADVISORY COMMISSION SPECIAL SESSION August 18, 2005, 4:00 p.m. Board Room, Carnegie Stout Public Library 360 W. 11th Street, Dubuque, Iowa Call to Order Meeting was called to order at 4:10p.m. following staff assurance of compliance with the Iowa Open Meeting Law. Commissioners Present: Rebecca Fabricius, William Intriligator, Jane Kenworthy, Paul Kohl, Susan Riedel, Mark Wahlert. Amy Link was unable to attend but she passed on her votes for #1 and #2 priority for consideration during the final goal setting session. Staff Present: Jerelyn O'Connor, Assistant City Manager Cindy Steinhauser. 1. Approval of Minutes from July 26, 2005. Motion by Riedel, Second by Kohl, all approved 2. Finalize Commission Goal Setting - Phase III Cindy reviewed the eight areas discussed at the July meeting, and the added staff comments, suggestions, and questions. Each commissioner was asked to vote on a #1 and #2 priority overall goal. The top priority goal was "Build Community Among Arts and Cultural Organizations" received the most votes from the Commission. The goals of "Advocacy" and "Branding Dubuque As Arts and Cultural Hub" received the second most votes. All commissioners agreed that goal #8, "Visibility and Accountability of the Commission to citizens and City Council" was not a goal exclusive of the other goals. It is an on-going activity of the Commission. . Commission then agreed to the following action steps under the priority goal of "Build Community among Arts and Cultural Organizations." Build Community Among Arts and Cultural Organizations. Convene cultural forums. Audience will be local arts and cultural organizations. Start with the existing cultural alliance. Actively participate in cultural alliance. f Commission will host two forums: 1) Question and Answer with Anita Walker, Director, Iowa Department of Cultural Affairs. Work with Convention and Visitor Bureau and Dubuque Main Street Ltd to organize. (task assigned to Sue Riedel) 2) Hold a second forum on topics of interest picked by Cultural Alliance. Convene and participate in Envision 2010 brainstorming by September 30. Visibility and Accountability of Commission to Citizens and City Council. Commission to prepare regular reports on impact of grants and request future funding. Communication to City Council during budget meeting. June - Prepare annual report on impact of funding and work of commission. Media Release- Issue media release on grants, interview recipients. October is Arts Month - possible City Council proclamation Awards "ceremony" announcing new grant recipients. Legislative - January-April Track pending legislation and send letters of support. 3. Items from Public - none 4. Adjournment Motion by Fabricius, Second by Kohl. All in favor. Meeting adjourned at 5:15.
