Irving School, located at 2520 Pennsylvania, is the only school in Iowa,
to receive the "National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence" award from
the U.S. Dept. of Education; and
last week this award was presented by Secretary of Education Riley in
Washington, DC to Barb Schoenauer, Principal of Irving School.
President Clinton then commended Irving and the other Blue Ribbon
Schools as National Leaders in Education; and
WHEREAS, this year long process of review to receive this prestigious award
consisted of a written application, review by a national panel, a site visit
and final selection by Secretary Riley; and
categories evaluated included: student focus and support, school
organization and culture, challenging standards and curriculum, active
teaching and learning, professional community, leadership and
educational vitality, school family and community partnerships and
high student performance.
WHEREAS, Dubuque is proud that Irving School is honored in this
prestigious manner.
NOW THEREFORE, I, TERRANCE M. DUGGAN, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE,
IOWA, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 16, 1999 AS:
"IRVING SCHOOL DA Y"
IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE AND COMMEND THE ADMINISTRATORS, TEACHERS,
AND STUDENTS FOR THIS DISTINGUISHED HONOR.
