the gaming entertainment industry is an important part of our community, improving our
overall economy and quality of life by employing nearly 900 people and paying more
than $31 million in payroll and benefits in 2011, distributing more than $5 million to local
charities and organizations, and more than $33.6 million in taxes annually; and
Mystique Casino and Diamond Jo Casino fund 100% of Dubuque Racing Association's
distributions to the City of Dubuque and local nonprofits to help ease tax payer burden
and support local community efforts; and
Diamond Jo Casino and Mystique Casino have joined together again in a cooperative
marketing effort called "Playdubuque.com" which seeks to attract even more visitors to
Dubuque and to increase visitor spending at local businesses; and
the overwhelming majority of casino customers enjoy gaming for its entertainment and
recreational value and do so responsibly; and
the commercial casino entertainment industry has devoted significant effort and
resources to the promotion and practice of responsible gaming, including establishing
the National Center for Responsible Gaming to fund research into disordered gambling
and youth gambling and funding 1- 800 - BETS -OFF; and
the commercial entertainment industry has designated July 30 through August 3, 2012,
as Responsible Gaming Education Week in order to raise awareness of this important
issue.
NOW THEREFORE, 1, ROY D. BUOL, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ON BEHALF
OF THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF AND CITIZENS OF DUBUQUE, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM THE
WEEK OF JULY 30- AUGUST 3, 2012, AS:
"RESPONSIBLE GAMING EDUCATION WEEK"
IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE AND ENCOURAGE ALL RESIDENTS TO JOIN ME IN EXPRESSING
GREAT APPRECIATION TO MYSTIQUE CASINO, AND DIAMOND JO CASINO FOR SERVING
AS AN ANCHOR FOR LOCAL TOURISM EFFORTS, MAKING SUBSTANTIAL CHARITABLE
CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE TRI -STATE AREA, AND HELPING TO LESSON THE BURDEN OF
CITY GOVERNMENT BY PROVIDING ADDITIONAL TAX REVENUE.
IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my
hand and caused the Great Seal of the City of
