This certificate signifies that the City of Dubuque has succesfully
met the guidelines established for the creation of an 11.1 mile
state-designated water trail on the Mississippi River from the A.Y.
McDonald Park Boat Ramp and Access to the Massey Marina
Access and including the 2.1 route on Catfish Creek at the Mines of
Spain. Let it be known that the Dubuque Water Trail is open for
public water recreation in Dubuque County on the Mississippi
River.
This water trail is designated on the 23rd Day of June, 2012.

Planning Services Manager Laura Carstens is transmitting the Certificate of Designation
from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources presented to the City of Dubuque for
the Dubuque Water Trail.
The 11.1 mile Dubuque Water Trail was funded by a $6,000 IDNR Water Trails grant
with matching funds provided by the project partners: the Dubuque County
Conservation Board, the Friends of the Mines of Spain, and the City of Dubuque. The
Dubuque Water Trail follows the western shoreline of the Mississippi River from A.Y.
McDonald Park Boat Ramp to the Massey Marina Boat Ramp, with access points at the
Chaplain Schmitt Island Boat Ramp, the American Trust River's Edge Plaza, and the
Mines of Spain Catfish Creek Canoe Launch.

Enclosed is the Certificate of Designation from the Iowa Department of Natural
Resources (IDNR) presented to the City of Dubuque for the Dubuque Water Trail. The
IDNR Water Trails Program staff was in Dubuque on June 23, 2012 to designate and
officially open the Dubuque Water Trail. The designation ceremony was followed by a
boat parade of canoeists, kayakers, and the Solid Steel dragon boat team. The event
was held in conjunction with the Boat Fest at the National Mississippi River Museum
and the US Fish & Wildlife Service Summer of Paddling event on Catfish Creek in the
Mines of Spain.

Assistant Planner David Johnson managed the grant administration, planning,
coordination, interpretative and directional signs, implementation, publicity and
brochure, and designation ceremony for the Dubuque Water Trail project, in cooperation
with the IDNR and our project partners, and with assistance from the City's Public
Information Office and Leisure Services Department.
