Wand — Architect -at -Large Position
Honorable Mayor Buol and City Council:
As many of you know, I was forced to seek employment outside of Dubuque at the end of 2010 and
found a full time position with OPN Architects in Cedar Rapids. Since that time, I have maintained my
home in Dubuque while also renting an apartment in Cedar Rapids in order to save time and money
commuting to work during the week. On Monday, July 2, I purchased a house in Cedar Rapids into
which I will move in mid - September, thereby making it my permanent residence. I will continue to own
my duplex at 940/942 Mt. Pleasant Street in Dubuque but will rent out both units going forward.
Realizing that city commissions require residency, I felt it only proper to communicate this information
to you as soon as it was finalized. I have no desire to leave my position as the licensed architect on the
Historic Preservation Commission but know my on -going participation would not meet the intent. That
being said, I offer the following process as an option to terminating my involvement on the commission:
1. City advertises for a replacement.
2. City Council allows me to continue to serve until a qualified replacement is found.
3. We revisit the situation on an annual basis or when my current term expires.
Due to the limited number of registered architects who are residents of Dubuque, I realize that finding a
qualified replacement may be difficult and would be happy to continue to serve my hometown in this
capacity. As a property owner in the city and someone who will remain involved with organizations such
as Dubuque Main Street and the Dubuque Museum of Art, my vested interest in the success of Dubuque
and our efforts to protect our historic architecture; and expand the community's knowledge and
appreciation of historic preservation will not diminish, as it has not over the past 18 months.
