Dear Mayor Roy,
Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to loin us at the IBM's "An Evening with Smarter
Crtres Pioneers" - and for graciously participating in the panel discussion
We are very honoured that so many of our friends were able to witness the signing of the IBM Smarter
Cities Challenge Grant for Singapore's Jurong Lake Distnct (JLD) project Launched rn 2011, the
Smarter Cities Challenge is a three -year, 100 -city, US$50 million philanthropic initiative that funds rn-
person engagements by teams of top IBM experts, who study and then make detailed recommendations
addressing locally important urban issues Jurong Lake Distnctlorns an illustrious list of past winners of
this grant from Chicago, Chengdu and Glasgow to name a few - cities from around the world that have
benefited from this initiative
The Jurong Lake Distnct Smarter Cities Challenge will be an exciting project and the team of IBM
experts are looking forward to worlang closely with the URA, EDB and their partner agencies to explore
innovative and out -of -the -box ideas and solutions to enhance the JLD as a smart, sustainable, and
connected high - density "living showroom"
I would also like to thank the illustrious panel of speakers who joined us at the discussions, In
Conversation wash Smarter Cases Pioneers We had a lively session with three key takeaways at the end
of the evening
First, effective community engagement is important to create a more sustainable city Second, to be
future - ready, cities must — and can - integrate data across the different domains for better city -wide
decision making, proactive problem solving and enhanced co- ordination of limited resources Tlurd,
mobility and social networks are today's realities - governments and businesses alike need to integrate
this reality into their agenda
