Proclamation Hunger & Homelessness WHEREAS, in one year in Dubuque 52,000 meals are served to hungry individuals unable to provide for themselves and over 600 men, women and children are homeless, which is a devastating experience causing disruption in families and loss of personal dignity; and WHEREAS, over 75 local organizations, government and religious agencies and organizations compassionately respond to the needs of those experiencing hunger and homelessness with food, clothing, shelter, services and permanent housing; and WHEREAS, the Homeless Advisory Board meets regularly to collaborate and coordinate services as no one in Dubuque should be isolated or discriminated against because of hunger or homelessness; and WHEREAS, Dubuque joins over 500 communities and college campuses in the United States in observing Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Month. A month filled with events to raise awareness of hunger and homeless issues in our own community, include: ? Saturday, November 12 Fourth Annual Project Concern Blanket Drive; ? Tuesday, November 15 Culvers’ “Day of Warmth” (proceeds benefit heating assistance program); ? Wednesday, November 16, 6:30 P.M. Panel presentation hosted by Homeless Advisory Board and Clarke College Campus Ministry; ? Saturday, November 19, an “Attitude of Gratitude” benefit dinner and auctions sponsored by Maria House; ? Free Thanksgiving Day meal coordinated by Donna Ginter . NOW THEREFORE, I, TERRANCE M. DUGGAN, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER 2005 AS: “HUNGER AND HOMELESSNESS AWARENESS MONTH” IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE AND URGE ALL CITIZENS TO JOIN THE COUNCIL IN RECOGNIZING THE SEVERE DEVASTATION FACED BY PERSONS EXPERIENCING HUNGER AND HOMELESSNESS AND TO SUPPORT LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS IN THEIR EFFORTS TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF THOSE WHO ARE HUNGRY AND HOMELESS.
