Dear Senator Connolly,
This letter is to inform you that the City of Dubuque has received a $15,500
Historic Resource Development Program Grant from the State Historical Society
of Iowa to conduct an archeological investigation in and around the Shot Tower
as part of the City of Dubuque's project to rehabilitate and interpret the Shot
Tower. The Shot Tower was constructed in 1856 to manufacture lead shot
ammunition. It is one of the few remaining in the United States.
Significant fill has been placed around the tower's foundation over time, reducing
its apparent height. The HRDP Grant will enable archeological investigation of
the tower's foundation, aiding in interpretation of lead shot production employed
during the tower's early years.
The Dubuque Shot Tower is nationally significant because it is a rare and unique
surviving example of the shot tower property type. It is the only tapered square
obelisk shot tower example. It is the only surviving shot tower that represents
lead shot production technology of its time. Nationally then, the Dubuque Shot
Tower is the only surviving example of its type (full height tower), phase
(architecturally elaborated, in this case employing the Egyptian obelisk form), and
period (mid-19th Century). Its claim for national significance is based on its being
a well preserved surviving example of a relatively rare industrial structural type,
its unique qualities and time period related to its type, its association with a
specific era and method of private sector lead shot production, and its being the
sole surviving representative of shot towers which were associated with the
Mississippi River Valley and its lead-mining industry.
The City of Dubuque and the Historic Preservation Commission appreciate the
Iowa Legislature's allocation of funds to the State Historical Society for the
