The City of Dubuque supports the Dubuque Food Coop and its development in the
Historic Millwork. The Dubuque Food Co -op's mission is to provide high - quality products
that are local, natural, organic, and otherwise enhance the health and well being of the
members, community, and environment. This mission is consistent with the City of
Dubuque's efforts to create a sustainable city, one that includes healthy local foods.
The city of Dubuque has had a long history of support toward redevelopment of our
urban core, including the Historic Millwork District. This $200 million mixed used
redevelopment of historic warehouse buildings that will serve as a national model for
historic preservation and sustainability. This redevelopment promotes smart growth,
green jobs and the urban core as a place to live, work and play.
In addition, since 2008 sustainability has been a top priority for the Mayor and City
Council. Dubuque's definition of sustainability includes economic prosperity,
social /cultural vibrancy and environmental integrity and two of Dubuque's eleven
sustainability principles include support for Healthy Local Foods and Regional
Economy. The Dubuque Food Co -op project unites all of these initiatives and supports
the vision to make Dubuque a Masterpiece on the Mississippi.
I often say Dubuque's success is about people, planning and partnerships and our work
with the Dubuque Food Co -op exemplifies this philosophy. Thank you for your efforts to
make Dubuque a Masterpiece on the Mississippi.
Sincerely,
Michael C. Van Milligen
