PROCLAMATION
the Dubuque Shot Tower was constructed in 1856 to manufacture lead
shot ammunition and will celebrate its 150th Anniversary in 2006; and
the Shot Tower is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as
having national significance; and
the Shot Tower is one of only a few remaining shot towers in the United
States, and the only one west of the Mississippi River; and
the Shot Tower is part of the $188 million America's River project of
riverfront recreational and cultural venues, located at the Port of
Dubuque; and
the City of Dubuque has been awarded a federal Save America's
Treasures grant and a state Historic Sites Preservation grant for
rehabilitation and interpretation of the historic Shot Tower; and
this project will create an opportunity to interpret the Shot Tower, the
Mississippi River, and the country's industrial expansion westward by
providing access to this unique historic structure; and
the City of Dubuque, in partnership with the Convention and Visitors
Bureau and Central Alternative High School, will celebrate the
restoration of the historic Dubuque Shot Tower through various
community events during 2006.
NOW THEREFORE, I, ROY D. BUOL, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA
DO HEREBY PROCLAIM 2006 AS THE
"YEAR OF THE SHOT TOWER"
IN DUBUQUE, AND CALL UPON THE PEOPLE OF THE DUBUQUE AREA TO SUPPORT
THE RESTORATION OF THIS UNIQUE AND NATIONALLY SIGNIFICANT HISTORIC
STRUCTURE IN 2006.
IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto
set my hand and caused the Seal of the
City of Dubuque, IA to be affixed this 17th
