Dear Mayor Buol, City Mgr. and City Council members:
Recently, I had occasion to view a documentary on Wal-Mart, entitled "The High Cost of
Low Price" Perhaps some of you may have also viewed the same. I have seen other
videos on the same subject, but I found this one the most informative and, perhaps, a
more reliable source than the others. This (The High Cost of Low Price) video can be

As a native Dubuquer now living on the north side of Dubuque,I am happy that Mr.
Wayne Briggs is planning to make a shopping mart in using the acreage of the former
meat packing plant. And therefore I feel a "bit queasy" about a Wal Mart store moving
onto the vacated space. While it would give much employment to a sizable number of
persons, would not an accumulation of a multiple number of smaller, needed shops
provide this need, without burdening Dubuqueland residentswith the cost of Wal Mart
evasion of taxes; of Wal Mart employees having inadequate health-care assistance,; and
of the social injustice of paying foreign employees an inadequate $.18 per hour to shelve
WalMart stores at their proclamation of selling at lower cost than other stores.? Finally:,
What is THE MAIN REASON that Wal Mart wishes to build a SECOND store in
Dubuque?
In closing, I assure you that I and others are interested in "learning the Pros and the
Cons" provided by ANY reliable sources. We have confidence that each of you, will
continue to act responsibly for continuing the great progress council members have made
in supporting many issues for the good of its residents.
