Tuesday, February 07, 2006 On behalf of Dubuque Main Street Ltd. and as Manager of the Cultural Corridor, I would like to commend the City Council and its appointed Arts and Cultural Affairs Advisory commission for their support for arts and culture organizations. The financial support to the arts and cultural organizations continues to enrich and sustain the ornate facets of our community. Dubuque Main Street now has an intern to measure the impact of the arts in the Cultural District, known as the Downtown Dubuque Cultural Corridor (one of the inaugural 8 designated in 2004) recently designated through an arts and culture grant. Our intern is spearheading data collection that will include businesses in our designated Cultural Corridor. Part of this research includes answering the questions: How were the downtown restaurants and businesses affected when Disney on Ice performed at Five Flags? The Symphony? The Grand Theater? The Fighting Saints and other sporting events? This information will be instrumental in analyzing and assessing the needs and future growth of our downtown. There is always something great going on in our community, and downtown- whether it be the the recent Winter Jazz and Blues Festival, a concert, play, sporting event, or art reception. We all benefit from these opportunities to learn and grow and become more aware of the world around us. We thank you and appreciate your continued your support of these programs that further enhance and embrace arts and culture. Sincerely yours, Katie Bahl Program Specialist Dubuque Main Street Limited. 909 Main Street Suite 22LL. Dubuque, IA 52001 Phone: 563.588.4400. I am writing today to encourage you to approve the $235,000 in support for arts and culture in the recommend 2007 city budget. As Artistic Director and Theater Manager of the Bell Tower Theater, I can assure you that this money is very valuable to the individual arts and cultural organizations in Dubuque and to the arts community as a whole. Last year the Bell Tower Theater received an operating support grant from the City of Dubuque that assisted us in producing a record-breaking season where more than 15,000 people, residents and tourists alike, walked through our doors. In addition, the city has provided project support for our production of Honk! Jr. this coming July. This grant will allow us to start a brand new kids-for-kids theater program giving more than 60 local children the opportunity to participate in creating a live show not only for their friends and family but for the entire community. I commend the Council on their past support of arts and culture in our community. I am proud to live in a place that understands that the arts are an important aspect of our basic quality of life and is willing to provide financial assistance to those organizations that are committed to producing the best arts and cultural experiences possible. I encourage you to sustain this commitment by renewing this funding for 2007. Susan J. Riedel Artistic Director & Theater Manager I 2728 Asbury Road. Dubuque, Iowa 5200 I.
