Re: Convention and Visitors Bureau I Quarterly Report
Dt: 29 March 2006
The Dubuque Convention and Visitors Bureau has been working hard and successfully
working toward achieving and exceeding the Goals established in our 3 year plan.
Consumer Marketing, Group Tour Marketing, Convention Marketing, Awareness
Development, Hospitality and regional tourism efforts have all been in full swing to kick
off the new year!
New Consumer Marketing efforts have been put in place including a new DVD, Visitors
Guide and Travel Package promotions. The DVD is an 8 minute dynamic preview of all the
area has to offer to visitors. The new visitors guide is even larger than last year and
features member businesses and their offerings. The Travel Packages are a redevelopment
of an idea that was created last year to try to get visitors to come and stay longer and
more often. The packages new format allows the CVB to promote member hotels and
attraction packages. The 4 packages that are being featured are Gambling, Golf,
Romance, and Family Fun. The packages will be promoted quarterly through a direct
mailing database of 10,000 households that the CVB maintains and through an e-blast
postcard promotion to another 2,500 households. These promotions will be linked to a
website that will allow interested travelers to get the details and make reservations. All
of the new materials and promotions are included in your packets for your review as well.
The Dubuque CVB worked with the events and festivals that occurred during the first
quarter to promote them to consumers. The Eagle Watch was extremely successful
boosting attendance from 300 attendees to over 1,200 attendees. The CVB also worked
hard on the America's River Festival by preparing marketing materials, securing sponsors,
developing a marketing and promotional schedule for the event and working with contract
employee Keith Rahe on all the event logistics. Staff coordinated the press events and
worked with event attendees such as Stihl Timber Sports to secure lodging.

Group Tour Marketing has gone well this quarter. CVB staff attended two national trade
shows to promote Dubuque to Tour Operators. The American Bus Association Convention
and the National Bank Club Market Place were both well attended by planners and
Dubuque was very well received. The Bureau met with over 25 planners and discussed
ideas for upcoming trip itineraries. Direct mail pieces targeting groups were printed and
sent to Group Planners to follow up on leads generated at the travel shows that staff
attended. These professional pieces showcase what Dubuque has to offer and invite
planners to come and visit for themselves at upcoming familiarization tours of Dubuque.
There is a third direct mail piece targeting groups with this packet to allow our partner
members to send information on America's River to groups they work with as well.
Convention Marketing efforts have been very strong this quarter. The sales effort has been
effective and the number of bids that the CVB staff has been able to coordinate for
members has been at a record high. At the last meeting of the CVB Advisory Board it was
reported that the hotels were very pleased with the amount of business that was being
sent to them over the last 3-6 months. During this time frame over 61 bids have been sent
and many conferences have been secured. Delegate counts for 2006 have now risen to
54,000.
Announcements of large conventions have also been at an all time high. During the first
quarter the CVB announced the return of the NCAA Division III National Wrestling
Championships, the Iowa Winter Games renewed for 3 more years, North American Trainer
Association, Stihl Timber Sports Lumber Jack Series Competition, Bass Masters Regional
Fishing Tournament and the Kiwanis District Illinois-Eastern Iowa convention among many
others. Press conferences were held to announce each of these events to Dubuque.
Direct Mail was also part of the convention marketing effort. Similar pieces with a
different message appealing to meeting planners was the focus of this set of pieces that
was sent to a database of over 3,000 well qualified leads.
Awareness of the Dubuque area was again heightened by features from CNN, the Chicago
Tribune, MA Living and Bureau Staff hosted these and other media to prepare stories for
spring publications.
The development of a Hospitality Training Program is going very well. The TEAM Dubuque
Team Creativity training will begin with Disney coming back to Dubuque on April 19th and
will then continue with on site front line team building trainings through our partner, NICC
Town Clock Center for Professional Development. This training will also be supported by an
on line tool kit which will feature additional training curriculum for those that choose to
participate in the program.
Regional Tourism efforts have continued to grow through our affiliation with the Tri-State
Tourism Council. Our Tri-State organization has been preparing for the kick off of See
America Week on May 10th. The CVB staff is also working with the Quad Cities CVB to put
this year's coop opportunities in place. The Bureau's co-sponsor newspaper tab inserts in
the Chicago Suburban Journal and Topics weekly paper and in the Sunday Des Moines
Register 3 times in the Summer and Fall. These coops are available at very reasonable
prices to our tourism member businesses.

,eStled in the bluffs of the
meandering Mississippi
River, Dubuque, Iowa is a
delightful destination for
your next weekend getaway,
business meeting or family vacation.
Nicknamed "The Key City", Dubuque was
the first city founded in the state, in
1788, by French traveler and fur trader
Julien Dubuque.
Historically speaking, Dubuque is
chock-full of opportunities to see and
experience life on the Mississippi as it
was hundreds of years ago. While this
community of 60,000 revels in its past
and offers visitors a look back in time
through its architecture, antique
shopping and interactive river museum,
Dubuque is at the same time looking to
the future and sharing its excitement
with visitors through some of its newest
amenities, namely the new America's
River Project, a $188 million dollar
riverfront renaissance that has already
attracted thousands of visitors from
across the country to see the best that
Dubuque has to offer.
America's River is part history, part
recreation, part education - and all
excitement. It offers the National
Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium,
Mississippi Riverwalk and amenities, the
Grand River Center, The Grand Harbor
Resort and Waterpark, riverboat access,
casino-style gambling and more.
Whatever your interests, there is some.
thing delightful in Dubuque that's just
for you ...
... beautiful rolling hills for hiking,
biking and skiing.
... countless examples of Victorian
architecture to peruse.

I erhaps Dubuque's slogan
should be "The City of
Festivals". We boast a long
list of annual festivals which
cover the four seasons. There
is something for everyone at a Dubuque
festival, from home. baked breads to chili
cook-off contests, from regional jazz per-
formers in the downtown
streets to classical strings in the park,
from homemade crafts to original
paintings and sculptures for sale. Here
are but a few highlights of area festivals:
Spring
America's River Festival is three fun-filled
days of activities featuring key
attractions native to the Port of
Dubuque. The festival focuses on show-
casing the Mississippi River and all of its
facets. Plan now to join us for regional
and national musical entertainment,
food, children's activities and the Bass
Masters Fishing Tournament.
DubuqueFesVVery Spedal Arts is the all art
extravaganza weekend held each
May in Dubuque's historic downtown. The
Main Street area comes alive with music,
art, dance, storytelling, old house tours
(exploring Dubuque's historic homes),
Dubuque Museum of Art displays, food
and beverages.
Summer
Enjoy live, outdoor music, one Friday
night a month in June, July, August, and
September, under the historic Town Clock
in downtown Dubuque. Called Dubuque ...
and All That Jazz, you can enjoy live
regional musicians with thousands of area
music lovers. People gather (the streets
are blocked off for pedestrians) to listen
to the high-caliber bands, to dance, to
mingle, and to enjoy the food and
24
beverages supplied by local vendors.
Dubuque Fest <I< River Fest are two
summer festivals which celebrate our
heritage and the artists who capture it.
Riverfest is an offshoot of Dubuquefest,
and the traditional and well-loved craft
fair is central to the Riverfest
celebrations_ It is held in Washington Park.
We don't just celebrate on one day to
mark our nation's independence; we
have events for several days surrounding
the Fourth of July holiday. The Dubuque
Symphony Orchestra hosts its annual
concert at the Dubuque County
Fairgrounds, complete with fireworks,
food and children's games. The Dubuque
Jaycees and local Radio Dubuque stations

I east your senses on a plethora of
palate pleasers when you stay in
Dubuque. Take your pick from
the cozy neighborhood hangouts
with daily specials and local
flair, to the comfort of your favorite
franchise restaurant, to the most
elegant of dining options, with quiet
candlelight and river vistas.
As a Midwestern city, we are famous for
our corn-fed beef, river catfish,
homegrown sweetcorn, and sinfully rich
candies and desserts.
While our heritage blends the flavors of
German and Irish cooking, the
restaurant scene in Dubuque and sur-
rounding areas is well-represented by
local, family-owned restaurants with
Greek, Italian, Cajun, Chinese,
Mexican, Japanese and continental
cuisine.
Whether it's a quick meal for lunch or
dinner, a business outing with clients
and vendors, a romantic date with
someone speciaL, or an evening with
the family, Dubuque has countless
restaurants that offer a wide range of
menus and dining styles, including
cafes, coffee houses, fine dining,
supper clubs, buffets, pizza,
sandwiches, burgers and more.
Tickle your fancy, or shall we say your
taste buds, with the many dining
options in Dubuque and the Tri-state
area. Whether you're dining indoors or
out, you will enjoy eating in Dubuque.
See the Restaurant Guide for details on area restaurants.

In the historic downtown area, you'll find the Grand Opera House, a recently
renovated jewel, dating back to 1889. Local and regional theater productions
are featured here year. round. A short stroll and you will find yourself at the
Five Flags Thealer, another architectural gem, built in 1910 and modeled after
the Moulin Rouge in Paris. This is home to the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra, who
, boasts a year-round schedule of concerts.
Next door is the Five Flags Arena-home to
the junior league Dubuque Thunderbirds Hockey
Team, plus a venue for circuses, and major
entertainer concerts. One of the newer
additions to the theater scene is the
Bell Tower Theater and Events Center, which hosts
full production plays, musicals and single
performers.
