PROCLAMA TION
WHEREAS, Dubuque has been blessed with the Girl Scouts organization since the early
1930's, receiving its first charter in June, 1935 and chartered annually ever
since; and
WHEREAS, on April 22, 2006 Dubuque is officially celebrating 70 years as a chartered Girl
Scout Council, namely Little Cloud Council, which includes girls in Dubuque,
Clayton, Delaware and part of Jones and Jackson Counties in Iowa and East
Dubuque, Illinois; and
WHEREAS, the mission of Girl Scouting is to build girls of confidence, courage, and
character who make the world a better place. It is the largest voluntary
organization for girls in the world; and
WHEREAS, approximately 16% of girls in K.12 in Little Cloud's jurisdiction is a Girl Scout
(national average is 11%). 44% of all 1st through 3'd grade girls are Girl Scouts;
and
WHEREAS, Dubuque's Girl Scouts include traditional Girl Scouts troop, Girl Scouting in
the Girl's Club; Camp Little Cloud Resident and Day Camp; Outreach
Programs and collaborations with area colleges. Additionally, Camp Little
Cloud near Epworth, Iowa hosts hundreds of girls each summer and boasts of
the best horseback riding and training facilities in northeast Iowa; and
WHEREAS, all of the proceeds from the major fundraiser Cookie Sale remain in our Council
and two major service projects are undertaken each year "Scouting for Food"
and "Make a Difference" Day.
NOW THEREFORE, I, ROY D. BUOL, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA DO
HEREBY PROCLAIM SATURDAY, APRIL 22, 2006 AS:
"GIRL SCOUTS OF LITTLE CLOUD COUNCIL'S 70TH ANNIVERSARY DA Y"
AND CONGRATULATE ALL PAST AND PRESENT STAFF, VOLUNTEERS, AND GIRLS WHO
HAVE WORKED HARD TO KEEP THIS A VIABLE, HELPFUL ORGANIZATION ALL THESE
YEARS.
IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my
hands and caused the Great Seal of the City of
Dubuque, IA to be affixed this 17th day of April,
2006.
