Re: Proposed Hunting OIdinmce
I request that the City Council reconsider a hunting ordinance for certain property owners
within the city linlits. This revised ordinance would allow for the City Council to
approve a permit for individual property owners' permission to hunt on their own
property (over ten acres & zoned agricultural). I suggest that this permit be renewed
annually within reasonable discretion by city staff, after initial city council approval. I
further request the City not require these pre-approved property owners the req~m<:nt
to notifY the police department prior to every hunting event-but I would lean towards the
police chiefs recommendation on this matter.
I believe that the limitations of firearms as proposed within the recently defeated hunting
& target-shooting ordinance are reasonable (mainly not allowing rifles in City limits).
This proposed ordinance would provide a benefit to the City of limiting the population of
certain animals, some of which are damaging to private property.
I consider this an important issue, even though I don't hunt very often - as it provides a
mechanism for myself and other property owners to hunt within luw.tations.
Furthermore, I would consider it a "negative" to being an owner of property within the
City without such approval.
In addition, I think at some point the Council will likely have to consider the growing
population of deer and what other methods can be used to control this gro'Wth. Some
considerations may include: extending the current bow hunt season, providing incentives
for harvesting does, and possibly a short shotgun season.
Respectfu1ly submitted,
