Proclamation_Family Medical Leave Act AnniversaryTHE CITY OF Dutji Masterpiece on the Mississippi PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, the strength of our nation, and all of its states and cities, flows from the promise of individual equality and freedom of choice; and WHEREAS, twenty years ago, just a few weeks after his inauguration, President Clinton fulfilled a campaign pledge and signed his first bill, the Family and Medical Leave Act, (FMLA) into law on February 5, 1993 that took effect on August 5, 1993; and WHEREAS, the FMLA entitles eligible employees of covered employers to take up to twelve workweeks of unpaid, job - protected leave in a 12 -month period for specified family and medical reasons with continuation of group health insurance coverage under the same terms and conditions as if the employee had not taken leave; and WHEREAS, the FMLA was amended in 2008 and 2010 to provide employees with family members serving in the Armed Forces, National Guard and Reserves up to 26 workweeks of leave during a single 12 -month period to care for a covered servicemember with a serious injury or illness if the eligible employee is the servicemember's spouse, son, daughter, parent, or next of kin, and in 2013 additional military caregiver leave protections will go into effect. NOW THEREFORE, 1, ROY D. BUOL, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ON BEHALF OF THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF AND CITIZENS OF DUBUQUE DO HEREBY RECOGNIZE THE 20T" ANNIVERSARY OF THE FAMILY & MEDICAL LEAVE ACT (FMLA) IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, AND URGE RESIDENTS TO SUPPORT AND WORK TOWARD FULL FMLA COMPLIANCE WHICH REAFFIRMS OUR COMMITMENT TO SUPPORTING THIS COMMUNITY'S FAMILIES.
