Re: The safety of our tenants and all persons crossing the intersection of Locust and
Sixth Street and the safety of all persons using the alley running North and
South between Fifth Street and Eighth Street.
DEMOGRAPHICS:
88 tenants
09 tenants between 90 and 98 years of age
24 tenants between 80 and 90 years of age
49 tenants on either a cane, walker, wheelchair and/or in need of assistance
34 in need of assistance in case of an emergency
13 hearing impaired
09 sight impaired
04 on oxygen
23 on canes
16 on walkers
06 in wheelchairs ( 02 On electric scooters)
REQUEST: A pedestrian crosslight at the intersection of Locust and Sixth
Street and the re-surfacing of the alley running North and South
between Fifth Street and Eighth Street.
(On October 17, 2005 a request was made to the City Council from me
requesting a pedestrian crosslight at the intersection of Locust and
Sixth Street.
On November 07, 2005 Mr. Gus Pshihoyos, Mr. Bill Schlictman and Mr.
Klostermann( standing in for Mr. Vogt) came to investigate the request of
October 17, 2005. At that time they said," It is too cold (freezing) for work
to be done now. We will address the alley issue in the spring of 2006." Mr.
Pshihoyos said, " I will research the City Manuals in regard to a pedestrian
Crosslight at the intersection of Locust and Sixth Street." )
DANGERS TO OUR TENANTS:
Traffic on Locust Street is moving 25 - 30 miles an hour between the Post Office,
soon to be Federal Building, and Washington Park on the one side and the
Ecumenical Tower and US Bank on the other side. There is no safe area to cross the
street.
Presently, tenants are moving a block North and then a block South to get to the
Federal Building-Post Offiee and Washington Park across the street! The other
alternative is to walk a block South and then a block North to get to either the Post
Office or Washington Park. The procedure is repeated to return home.
How would you like your 80 to 98 year old mother or father having to do this ant
time, let alone in the midst of winter?
All other persons also take their chances crossing traffic to get to the Post Office or
to Washington Park for festivals, remembrance services, etc. During festivals,
especially from May through September, this intersection is dangerous to all
persons, especially the elderly and the chaUenged.
