Library Board of Trustees Update
From the Meeting of
March 28, 2013
Present: Paula Connors, President; Mike Willis, Vice President; Frederick
Miller, Secretary; Trustees, John Anderson - Bricker, Diann Guns, and Jenny
Weiss
Absent: David Hammer
The Board met Thursday, March 28. Below is a summary of their meeting:
• February marked 67% of the fiscal year lapsing and 64% of the budget
has been expended
• Check outs were down 4 percent year -to -date and seen in print
materials. Open Access is actually up in check outs by 7 percent over
the same time last year.
• Six college students were interviewed who are interested in the Marketing
Intern position so that we can launch the "Geek the Library" campaign.
Two more interviews are scheduled for April 1 and 2 before a decision will
be made. The internship and campaign are expected to last six months.
• The Library Foundation has granted several projects: a pledge of $4,000
to match a DRA grant, $8,000 for e-books and $8,000 for leased material
for the lending library.
• The Friends of the Library funded a new service " Zinio." Zinio provides
online magazines that are identical to the print collection. The
subscriptions are free to library card holders who can build their own
libraries. Issues do not need to be returned as Zinio offers simultaneous
access. Notification is provided when a new issue is published.
• Susan is in the middle of writing several grants. One is to Best Buy that
will provide "Maker Space" (a.k.a. a portable digital media lab) for teens
(which adults can also use), and a Better World Books grant that will get
first -grade children from the 4 elementary schools "in need of assistance"
to the library for an introduction to library service and to get library cards.
• Susan has been invited to participate in a 10 -year anniversary of Project
ABLE (American Bulgarian Library Exchange) that will take place as a
conference held in Sofia, Bulgaria. She will attend and present at the
conference on the topic of green /sustainable libraries.
• Several strategic planning processes were reviewed and considered for
adoption. The board voted to create a long -range plan using data
received through the recent community survey and the information that is
still being collected on library effectiveness. When direction, or goals,
have been identified the public will be invited to attend something similar
to a town hall meeting to provide input.
• The board approved a proposal for the Library Services Advisory
Commission (the group that will make decisions on the open access
disparity issues). A professional facilitator will be contracted to oversee
facilitators from the Iowa State Extension Services. The IA State staff will
actually do the facilitation, but with the training and oversight from the
professional the variability that could emerge will be minimized. Each of
the three other libraries will be asked to contribute $200 to this process.
The Commission's first meeting is scheduled for April 22 at C -SPL.
• Save the date of April 26th! Volunteer recognition dinner
