Ware, Leisure Services Manager Masterpiece on the Mississippi TO: Michael C. Van Milligen, City Manager FROM: Marie L. Ware, Leisure Services Manager DATE: April 9, 2013 SUBJECT: Multicultural Family Center Future Talk Program Assistant Addition INTRODUCTION The purpose of this memo is to request approval to hire a program assistant for Future Talk, a summer program of the Multicultural Family Center. X BACKGROUND The Multicultural Family Center has sponsored the summer Future Talk program. This program is a cornerstone of programming for the MFC. Dana Livingston has been the program's volunteer Director since its inception. Dana has been a leader and innovator of the program. Dana is assisted with the program by AmeriCorps members that lead the Future Talk participants in their many activities. As the program has matured and developed it has been determined that having a program assistant would strengthen the program. DISCUSSION The MFC Board provides funding for programs including Future Talk. Gil Spence, Acting MFC Director, shared that the MFC Board has a grant that will pay the costs of the program assistant. Consuking with Randy Peck, Personnel Manager, he shared that the position is best placed as a city employee versus a contract. This will offer the city general liability protection and be similar to our employee relationship for positions like MFC Site Supervisor or program assistants in recreational programs. The position would report to the MFC Director. This position was not budgeted, however full costs will be reimbursed to the City by the MFC Board through their grant. A person that has worked with the Future Talk in the past and is very familiar with the program would be appointed to the position. RECOMMENDATION I recommend creation of a program assistant position at the MFC with costs to be reimbursed by the MFC Board. The position would be placed at NA-25, Step E, which would start at $11.73 and move to $12.02thour on July 1st. cc: Gil Spence, Acting MFC Director Randy Peck, Personnel Manager Jenny Larson, Budget Director
