TO:
The Honorable Mayor and City Council Members
FROM:
Michael C. Van Milligen, City Manager
SUBJECT: Sanitary Sewer at Training Center
Fire Chief Dan Brown has recommended that the City provide additional financial
support for the joint City/County Fire Training Center Project in the amount of $25,000
to hook up to the sanitary sewer. This would be in addition to the $365,000 provided to
purchase the burn simulator.
Funding is available from savings in the Fire Department Fiber Optic Project budget
item.
I concur with the recommendation and respectfully request Mayor and City Council
approval.

CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA
MEMORANDUM
June 27, 2006
TO: Michael C. Van Milligen, City Manager
FROM: E. Daniel Brown, Fire Chief [D B
SUBJECT: Sanitary Sewer at Training Center
Site preparation work for the Phase II & III building at the Training Center is nearing
completion. The construction on this second building that will hold the classrooms,
office area and indoor training arena is scheduled to begin in the middle of July 2006.
Part of the city's commitment to the Training Center is to provide the sanitary sewer
connection. Engineering staff consisting of Bob Schiesl and Todd Irwin looked over the
project and recommended an individual lift station be installed at the site and connected
to the city gravity system behind the Julien Care Facility.
The cost for this lift station and piping is estimated to be under $25,000. In the Fire
Department FY07 CIP, there will be a savings from the fiber optic project to cover this
expense. I am recommending using this savings to purchase the equipment and the
installation for the lift station. I have visited with Budget Director Dawn Lang and she
concurs with this recommendation.
I respectfully request that this project be presented to the Mayor and City Council for
their approval.
