Minutes_Arts and Cultural Affairs Advisory Commission 3/26/13Minutes ARTS AND CULTURAL AFFAIRS ADVISORY COMMISSION March 26, 2013 Lacy Board Room Carnegie-Stout Library The meeting was called to order by Chair Marina O'Rourke at 4:30 p.m. following staff assurance of compliance with the Iowa Open Meeting Law. Commissioners present: Paul Hemmer, Ellen Henkels Louise Kames, Marina O'Rourke, Sue Riedel. Gina Siegert joined the meeting at 4:45. Commissioners excused: Julie Steffen Staff present: Jan Stoffel Pubic present: Deb Sandry, Executive Director, Dubuque Symphony Orchestra Approval of Minutes of January 22, 2013. Motion made by Hemmer, seconded by O'Rourke to approve minutes. Motion carried 6-0. NEW BUSINESS 1. Deb Sandry introduced herself to Commissioners as the new Executive Director of the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra. She previously worked for the Symphony of the Quad Cities. 2. In January, the "Call for Sculptors" for the 2013-2014 Art on the River Exhibit was emailed to hundreds of artists, galleries and educational institutions, posted on regional and national online sources, and advertised locally. This year, there were 79 entries from 47 artists from 18 states and one foreign country (Vienna, Austria). The 2013 Art on the River Exhibition will be installed in July 2013, with the date for the opening event scheduled for Thursday, July 11, 2013, at 5-7 p.m. at the Grand River Center. Staff presented the 10 finalists and 2 alternates chosen by the 2013-2014 Art on the River Jury: Finalists: • Conscious of Her Shores, Jason Lowrey, Williamsburg, VA • THEB #4 or #5, Jeff Boshart, Charleston, IL O Quarks VI and Quarks VII, Guy Bellaver, St. Charles, IL • River Boat Bench, Don Lawler, Stephensport, KY O Cone Flower Cluster, Bounnak Thammavong, Swisher, IA • Steel Inverted Arch, Kenneth Thompson, Blissfield, MI • Moving Compass, Kristin Thielking and Keven Brunett, Stevens Point, WI • Prairie Walker, James Johnson, Charleston, IL • All Things Truly Wicked Start from Innocence, Jessica Teckemeyer, Dubuque, IA Alternate Selections: • Rules of Civility, Kristin Garnant, Comanche, IA • Passion, John Bannon, Chicago, IL The jury has also made recommendations on siting the works along the Riverwalk and at the Grand River Center. On March 19, 2103, the Art on the River Committee voted unanimously to approve the jury's selections. Motion made by Hemmer, seconded by Kames, to approve the recommendations of the Art on the River Jury and forward to the City Council for its approval. Motion carried 6 -0. INFORMATION SHARING Commissioner Henkels will attend the 2103 Americans for the Arts national Conference in June in Pittsburgh with a staff member Stoffel. ADJOURNMENT Motion by Hemmer, seconded by Henkels, to adjourn. Motion passed 6 -0.
