In Fiscal Year 2013, the City Council approved $25,000 to fund a new Sustainable
Dubuque Community Grant program. The intentions of the grant program as defined by
the Sustainable Dubuque Collaboration are to demonstrate that anyone can be involved
in the Sustainable Dubuque initiative; to reach out to a diverse set of community
partners, including nonprofits, businesses, neighborhood associations and individuals;
and track measurable impact in the community.
Twenty -six applications were received in the first round of the Sustainable Dubuque
Community Grant program. Many applications addressed multiple sustainability
principles and /or pillars. Application requests totaled $54,174.
Sustainable Community Coordinator Cori Burbach and the Application Review
Committee recommend funding the following grant applications:
Project /Organization Amount
Petal Project $2,500
Driftless Dirt Mines of Spain Trail Run $750
Dubuque Bike Coop — Bicycle Maintenance $2,500
Clinics and Bicycle Checkout
Washington Neighborhood Community Garden $2,500
This is how we BBQ in DBQ $1,900
Dubuque Rescue Mission Greenhouse $2,500
Driftless Farm Crawl (ISU Extension & partners) $2,500
Circles Family Fun Night $1,100
Winter Farmers Market $2,233
108 Productions I AM Love Campaign $2,500
Multicultural Family Center Dubuque Welcome $1,600
Dinner
The Art of Reconciliation (Jim Ott) $2,500
Total recommended funding is $25,083. The additional $83 is available in the
Sustainability budget, as the payment due to the Iowa Commission on Volunteer
Services for the VISTA position was slightly less than expected.
Several opportunities exist with these projects to further the Sustainable Dubuque
initiative, and the City will pursue these opportunities. These include, but are not limited
to:
• Working with each project to capture the story through quantitative measures,
photos, videos, etc.
• Community Engagement Coordinator Nikola Pavelic and Sustainable Community
Coordinator Cori Burbach will recommend opportunities to build additional
engagement and dialogue components into projects.
• City staff and others will provide technical support on items related to each of the
sustainability principles such as purchase of reusable dinnerware, purchase of
local foods, and proper recycling /composting setup at events.
Additionally, several excellent proposals were not funded. Cori Burbach has already,
and will continue to, reach out to partners to provide alternative funding for some of
these projects and bring organizations together to collaborate to make as many projects
happen as possible.
I concur with the recommendation and respectfully request Mayor and City Council
approval.

including nonprofits, businesses, neighborhood associations and individuals; and track
measurable impact in the community. Seven members of a review committee, including
myself and Sustainable Dubuque VISTA Anderson Sainci, reviewed the applications.

Through social media, email, flyers, and personal meetings, we worked to engage
traditionally non - engaged audiences. Twenty -seven applications were received in the
