Each of the 50 states has designated an official state tree "through legislative action." Texas was the first state with their selection of the pecan tree in 1919 and Kentucky was the most recent with tulip poplar tree in 2012. The creation of America's State Tree Woodland Walk is proposed to be planted in September 2013 as part of a large annual conference of the National Association of State Park Directors (NASPD). Iowa's climate will allow tree plantings that represent state trees from 46 states and showcase the best of the hardiest, disease - resistant trees species. All 50 states will be included! The Woodland Walk will feature 18 table -top educational panels highlighting the state tree species from all 50 states along with their similarities, differences (seed, flower, color), habitat preference, recommended planting tips, and disease issues to consider. Planning for the Woodland Walk has been a collaborative effort between professional foresters and land- scape architects. An interpretive consultant is developing the educational messages and professional fabri- cation of table -top and kiosk panels. The creation and planting of the Woodland Walk will be an event in and of itself; with the national state park directors planting their state trees, installing the educational panels and constructing a four -sided in- terpretive kiosk. Regional press will be in attendance. 1 r America's State Tree Woodland Walk TREE LEGEND (-6J (13 (8) (1O)0t) 97_ 12; tip rmay Ove,look/Gatl}e In$ w[ __.Paved Trail (1) LAMER FIR (1) 50IGA311.6660E (a) BUCKEYE (1) 0061E &RCN (S) PECAN (6) Renew (7) FLEANEE6NCOOCWO00 (B) TU1.9 POLAR (9) PA.GNOUK (ol BLACK HILLS SPRUCE () EAStt&iMITEeetE (l2 COTTO•NVOO Ia!
