Library Board of Trustees Update
From the Meeting of
May 23, 2013
Present: Paula Connors, President; Frederick Miller, Secretary; Trustees, John
Anderson - Bricker, Diann Guns, and Jenny Weiss
Absent: Mike Willis
The Board met Thursday, May 23. Below is a summary of their meeting:
• April marked 83% of the fiscal year lapsing. Expenditures were at 78 %.
Revenue is at 103% of projections.
• Circulations in April were down 2 percent when compared to April of 2012.
Print circulation is down 4.2% (5% adult and 2% youth). At the same time
we face increased demand for downloadable material (up 36.3 %) and do
not have a dedicated line item for this format other than a reallocation of
existing lines and gifts we receive from the Foundation. An examination of
circulation of the types of print materials that are popular will take place so
that we can identify areas with less use with the idea of relocation of the
budget to support downloadable in time for FY 14.
• The Library Services Advisory Committee (LSAC) met on Monday, May
13. An executive committee of the LSAC was named. The Chair is Jeff
Goldsmith, Dubuque County; Vice- Chair, Angela English, Dyersville;
Secretary, Melissa Kane, Cascade, and Susan Henricks is the at -large
member. The meeting was facilitated by Abbie Gaffey of Iowa State
Extension Services. At the conclusion of the meeting the next steps in the
process had been identified. On June 20 the executive committee will
meet with Molly Menster who is interested in facilitating the seven public
focus groups. By June 21 Abbie Gaffey and Susan will have created
questions for the full committee to review and select. The questions will
derive from the meeting that all attended on May 13. The facilitator will
use these selected questions in focus groups. The questions may be
added to or modified depending on format used for other venues; for
example, there will be an online survey and hard copy surveys will be
offered to visitors in the libraries. The timeframe for the focus groups and
general survey will be early fall. The target to conclude the mission of the
LSAC is November 15, 2013.
