Proclamation Responsible Gaming Education DUB E ~""'-~, , PROCLAMA TION WHEREAS, the gaming entertainment industry is an important part of our community, improving our overall economy and quality of life by employing more than 800 people and paying more than $22 million in payroll and benefits in 2005, distributing more than $3.5 million to local charities and organizations, and $23,080,877 in taxes annually; and WHEREAS, the overwhelming majority of casino customers enjoy gaming for its entertainment and recreational value and do so responsibly; however WHEREAS, the commercial casino entertainment industry has devoted significant effort and resources to the promotion and practice of responsible gaming, including establishing the National Center for Responsible Gaming to fund research into disordered gambling and youth gambling and funding 1-800- BETS-OFF; and WHEREAS, the commercial entertainment industry has designated August 7-11, 2006 as Responsible Gaming Education Week in order to raise awareness of this important issue. NOW THEREFORE, I, ROY D. BUOL, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, BY VIRTUE OF THE AUTHORITY VESTED IN ME, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM THE WEEK OF AUGUST 7-11, 2006 AS: "RESPONSIBLE GAMING EDUCA TION WEEK" IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA AND ENCOURAGE ALL RESIDENTS TO JOIN ME IN EXPRESSING GREAT APPRECIATION TO DUBUQUE GREYHOUND PARK AND CASINO, AND THE DIAMOND JO CASINO FOR SERVING AS AN ANCHOR FOR LOCAL TOURISM EFFORTS, MAKING SUBSTANTIAL CHARITABLE CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE TRI-STATE AREA, AND HELPING TO LESSON THE BURDEN OF CITY GOVERNMENT BY PROVIDING ADDITIONAL TAX REVENUE.
