ARTS AND CULTURAL AFFAIRS ADVISORY
COMMISSION
REGULAR SESSION
Tuesday, June 12,2006,4:30 p.m.

CALL TO ORDER
Meeting was called to order at 4:05 p.m. following staff assurance of compliance
with the Iowa Open Meeting Law.
Commissioners Present: William Intriligator, Louise Kames, Amy Weber, Susan
Riedel, Mark Wahlert, Paul Kohl (4:10 p.m.)
Excused: Rebecca Fabricius
Staff Present: Jerelyn O'Connor, Kevin Firnstahl
APPROVAL OF MAY 23,2006, MINUTES
Motion by Weber to approve with corrected name spellings. Second by
Intriligator. All approved.
OLD BUSINESS
FY 07 Special Projects Grants
After discussion, the Commission apportioned funding amounts for the seven
top-ranked grants per attachment.
Motion by Intriligator to fund the Dubuque Museum of Art at $2,500. Second by
Kohl. Passed 5-0, one abstention (Wahlert).
Motion by Riedel to fund the Dubuque County Historical Society at $8,731.
Second by Kames. Passed 5-0, one abstention (Wahlert).
Motion by Riedel to fund Clarke College at $6,522, Second by Weber,
passed 5-0, one abstention (Kames).
Motion by Weber to fund the Dubuque Symphony at $9,583, Second by Kohl,
passed 5-0, one abstention (Intriligator).
Motion by Kames to fund Dubuque Main St., Ltd. at $3,622, Second by Riedel,
passed 5-0, one abstention (Intriligator).
Motion: by Intriligator to fund the Grand Opera house at $4,042, Second by Kohl,
passed 6-0.
Information sharing
Public Arts Conference: Louise Kames summarized the recent Iowa Public Art
Conference in Waterloo which was attended by Louise, Jerelyn, and Public Art
committee member Ellen Henkels. They were able to review sample contract and
long-range plans from other Iowa Communities' public arts committees.
O'Connor reminded the Commission the applications for commissioners whose
terms are expiring are due June 26. They will be reviewed by Council at their
July 5 meeting with appointments on July 17.
Intriligator excused 6:42 p.m.
O'Connor shared e-mail from a citizen on the Commission's funding for the Colts.
Wahlert plans to meet with Colts' Manager Greg Orwell regarding the
Commission's decision toward partial funding and the possibility or Mr. Orwell
addressing the Commission.
Arts & Culture Month
O'Connor shared an e-mail from Dubuque Cultural Alliance President John
Woodin regarding area organizations committing to taking on arts projects. A
lunch/meeting in scheduled for July 7 with the Alliance at noon in Conference
Room B. O'Connor suggested the Commission consider taking on a project.
Next Meeting: July 25, 4:30 p.m. in Library board room
Agenda item: Chairman Wahlert suggested discussing the Special Projects Grant
Program at the next meeting. Commission will review allocation offunding,
cycling grant amounts based on previous grant allocations to an organization and
possibly requiring a minimum scoring threshold for funding.
