Proclamation_50th Anniversary_March on Washington 8 28 13Masterpiece on the Mississippi PRO CILAMATION WHEREAS, A. Philip Randolph founded the March on Washington Movement with rallies in St. Louis, Chicago and New York in the 1940's and organized Youth Marches for Integrated Schools in the 1950's; and WHEREAS, In 1961, more children were in segregated schools than they had been in 1954, when the Supreme Court ruled that school segregation violated the Fourteenth Amendment. The Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) and Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) organized the first freedom rides in the summer of 1961, and eventually there were over 430 freedom riders, 300 of whom were arrested; and WHEREAS, Bayard Rustin worked with A. Philip Randolph to plan the "March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom," which took place on Wednesday, August, 28, 1963 with about 250,000 demonstrators in attendance; and WHEREAS, the March program included "Tribute to Negro Women Fighters for Freedom" and other remarks give by Eugene Carson Blake; John Lewis; Walter Reuther; James Farmer, Eva Jessye; Rabbi Uri Miller; Whitney M. Young Jr.; Matthew Ahmann; Roy Wilkins; Mahalia Jackson; Rabbi Joachim Prinz Randolph; and Dr. Benjamin E. Mays. During this event, Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., delivered his memorable "I Have a Dream" speech; and WHEREAS, Iowan Patti Miller was a 1964 Freedom summer participant and staffer with Dr. King and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference in the Chicago Freedom Movement, and Rev. Phillip Lawson became a committed peace activist as a teenager and participated in the March from Selma to Montgomery in 1965. NOW THEREFORE, 1, ROY D. BUOL, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ON BEHALF OF THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF AND CITIZENS OF DUBUQUE DO HEREBY RECOGNIZE THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE "MARCH ON WASHINGTON FOR JOBS AND FREEDOM" AND CALL UPON THE CITIZENS OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, TO OBSERVE THIS ANNIVERSARY IN RECOGNITION OF OUR CITY'S DIVERSITY.
