In Fiscal Year 2013, the City Council approved $25,000 to fund a new Sustainable
Dubuque Community Grant program. The intentions of the grant program as defined by
the Sustainable Dubuque Collaboration are to demonstrate that anyone can be involved
in the Sustainable Dubuque initiative; to reach out to a diverse set of community
partners, including nonprofits, businesses, neighborhood associations and individuals;
and track measurable impact in the community.
In the first round of grant funding of May 2013, City Council approved twelve out of
twenty -seven applications for a total funding of $25,083.
Twenty -six applications were received for the second round of funding, due August 1.
Groups who received funding during the first round were not eligible to apply for the
second grant period. Many applications addressed multiple sustainability principles
and /or pillars. Application requests totaled $53,743.
Sustainable Community Coordinator Cori Burbach and the Application Review
Committee recommend funding the following grant applications:

Julien Dubuque International Film Festival

$2,500
Voices Productions

Total recommended funding is $13,250. There will be a remaining $11,750 balance for
the next quarterly grant period.
Several opportunities exist with these projects to further the Sustainable Dubuque
initiative, and the City will pursue these opportunities. These include, but are not limited
to:
• Working with each project to capture the story through quantitative measures,
photos, videos, etc.
• Community Engagement Coordinator Nikola Pavelic and Sustainable Community
Coordinator Cori Burbach will recommend opportunities to build additional
engagement and dialogue components into projects.
• City staff and others will provide technical support on items related to each of the
sustainability principles such as purchase of reusable dinnerware, purchase of
local foods, and proper recycling /composting setup at events.
I concur with the recommendation and respectfully request Mayor and City Council
approval.

including nonprofits, businesses, neighborhood associations and individuals; and track
measurable impact in the community. The applications are reviewed quarterly by seven
members of a review committee, including myself and Sustainable Dubuque VISTA
Anderson Sainci.
In the first round of grant funding of May 2013, City Council approved twelve out of
twenty -seven applications for a total funding of $25,083.
