Proclamation_Days of Peace and CeasefireMasterpiece on the Mississippi PRO CILAMATION WHEREAS, the issue of peace embraces the deepest hopes of all peoples, and remains humanity's guiding inspiration; In 1981, the United Nations proclaimed the International Day of Peace be "devoted to commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples;" and WHEREAS, the United Nations expanded the observance of the International Day of Peace in 2001 to include the call for a day of global ceasefire and non - violence, and invited all nations and people to honor a cessation of hostilities for the duration of the Day of Peace; and WHEREAS, there is growing support within our nation for the observance of the International Day of Peace, including a group of Dubuque -area residents inviting all to create a culture of peace by participating in a city -wide celebration of this important day on Friday, September 20, and Saturday, September 21, 2013, focusing on non - violent conflict resolution; and WHEREAS, local and global violence impels all citizens to work toward converting humanity's noblest aspirations for world peace into a practical reality, for it is possible to see a community and the world turn from violent to nonviolent solutions within our lifetimes; and WHEREAS, the Dubuque Day of Peace organizing committee, the Dubuque Human Rights Commission and other organizations are co- sponsoring a talk by Rev. Phillip Lawson on the theme Civil Rights in a Culture of [non] Violence on Friday, September 20, at 7p.m. at Loras College; and a presentation on Saturday, September 21, at noon by Patti Miller at , Clarke University before the second annual "This is How We BBQ in DBQ" community bonding event at 2 p.m. NOW THEREFORE, 1, ROY D. BUOL, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, ON BEHALF OF THE CITY COUNCIL, STAFF AND CITIZENS OF DUBUQUE DO HEREBY PROCLAIM SEPTEMBER 20 AND 21, 2013, AS DAYS OF PEACE AND CEASEFIRE IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA AND CALL UPON THE CITIZENS OF DUBUQUE TO FURTHER AFFIRM A VISION OF OUR WORLD AT PEACE BY FOSTERING COOPERATION BETWEEN INDIVIDUALS, ORGANIZATIONS, AND NATIONS.
