Van Milligen, City Manager Bob Green, Water Department Manager ~, TO: SUBJECT: Centers for Disease Control and Prevention - Fluoridation Recognition INTRODUCTION This memorandum is being provided in notification of the City Water Department's recognition from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for its consistent and professional adjustment of water fluoride content to the optimum level for oral health for twelve consecutive months. The City Water Department has been providing fluoride in its water supply for the past . 50 plus years. ACTION No action is being requested at this time. This memorandum is being provided for information sharing. I am available at your convenience to discuss and answer any questions that you may have. CDC recommends water fluoridation as a safe, effective and inexpensive method of preventing tooth decay. Studies have shown that tooth decay is prevented among all age groups, not just children. This population-based measure has dramatically reduced the overall rates of tooth decay for most Americans. The state ofIowa has an excellent history of providing optimally fluoridated water in public water supplies, includiog new rural water supplies.
