Dear Mayor Buol:
OFFICE OF THE
REGIONAL ADMINISTRATOR
n
Congratulations to the City of Dubuque on receiving the National Award for Smart Growth
Achievement from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Sustainable Communities.
Dubuque was one of five National Award winners. Iowans can be proud that two of the five cities
receiving the EPA's awards are in Iowa.
The Smart Growth Award recognizes communities that use innovative policies and strategies to develop
ways that strengthen their economies, provide smart housing and transportation choices, and protect the
environment. The selected projects are innovative, provide a range of environmental benefits, make a
visible difference in communities, and demonstrate strong community participation and exemplary use
of smart growth approaches.
As I saw during my 2012 visit, the City of Dubuque has been a leader in community sustainability
efforts. This Smart Growth award celebrates the citizens of Dubuque for building a community that they
are proud to call "home."
Good luck in your journey to ensure that Dubuque remains a city of prosperity and sustainability. I look
forward to working with you and seeing the progress you are making on a future visit. Please feel free
to contact me at 913 - 551 -7006 if you or your staff have any questions.
