In Fiscal Year 2013, the City Council approved $25,000 to fund a new Sustainable
Dubuque Community Grant program. The intentions of the grant program as defined by
the Sustainable Dubuque Collaboration are to demonstrate that anyone can be involved
in the Sustainable Dubuque initiative; to reach out to a diverse set of community
partners, including nonprofits, businesses, neighborhood associations and individuals;
and track measurable impact in the community.
Twenty -seven applications have been funded to date. A previous balance of $3,727
existed in this fund; an additional $1,097 has been made available as previous grantees
closed out their requests while spending less than anticipated. This brings the total
available to $4,824.
Seventeen applications were received for the fourth round of funding, due February 1.
Previously - successful applicants will not be eligible for additional funding for one year
following their award. Many applications addressed multiple sustainability principles
and /or pillars. Application requests totaled $35,386.

The next round of Community Grants will be due July 1, when new funding will be

The Loras College Biology Department will plant the first edible landscape on campus,
engaging students and faculty. Food from the garden will be used on campus and
donated to local food shelters.
The Friends of Mines of Spain funding will be used for education materials and prairie
seed to plant 20 acres of former agricultural ground adjacent to the E.B. Lyons
Interpretive Center in native prairie.
The Historic Preservation Commission and Four Mounds will partner to host Crafstmen
to Laymen: Wood Windows Education Week. This funding will provide supplies for a
hands -on training for 60 residents, empowering them to restore entire window systems
in their homes.
CAPABLE Volunteer Co. has proposed the program Becoming A Healthier You. The
six -month program will educated their physically and mentally challenged volunteers
about healthy lifestyle choices through the introduction of guest speakers and activities.
Climb On is a new rock - climbing and adventure nonprofit focused on engaging
Dubuque's underserved youth. The Dubuque Adventures program will recruit at -risk
youth to participate in hands -on learning activities that expose participants to native
ecosystems and opportunities to understand human's impact on the environment.
2
The committee recommends funding for the volunteer -led All Africa initiative to provide
educational materials and some funding for food specific to native African cooking for
use at upcoming events. All Africa's mission is to bring the African community together
to celebrate the history, culture and people of the 56 countries of Africa and invite
Westerners to learn more about African culture.
Members of the Sustainable Dubuque Collaboration will work with grantees to improve
the sustainability of these events and initiatives, and work with those who were not
funded to make additional projects happen through partnerships whenever possible.
These recommendations will deplete the Community Grant funds for FY14, so there will
be no funds available in May. The next round of Community Grants will be due July 1,
when new funding will be available as part of the FY15 budget.
REQUESTED ACTION
I respectfully request City Council approval of the above - recommended Sustainable
Dubuque Community Grants.
