PARK AND RECREATION COMMISSION MEETING
Tuesday, January 9, 2007

PRESENT: Tom Blocklinger, Kim Daykin, Gary Harjehausen, Paul Hoffmann, and Evelyn
Nadeau

MINUTES It was moved by Blocklinger, seconded by Nadeau, to approve the minutes of
APPROVED; the December 12, 2006, meeting. The motion passed unanimously.
VOTE
REVIEW The current fiscal year CIP budget has funds for a new fee collection booth at
DESIGN OF Eagle Point Park. Staff has been working with Anderson Design & Consulting on
NEW FEE the project. Park Division Manager Bob Fritsch passed around drawings for the
COLLECTION proposed booth.
BOOTH AT
EAGLE POINT The booth will be moved farther east on Shiras Avenue and grading work will be
PARK: done to allow for a smoother entrance into the park. The building has prairie
architecture with limestone design; lighting under eaves to highlight limestone;
rest room; 13’ 6” overpass allowing all buses to enter park; meets ADA
requirements.
Commissioners were very happy with the design drawings shown.
PARK DIVISION Park Division Manager Bob Fritsch informed commissioners:

Since next week is supposed to be low temperatures, park staff will start

flooding ice rinks at Allison-Henderson and Flora. Mr. Fritsch continues to

work with full time staff on reorganization of duties for spring to make
maintenance efforts more efficient; regular meetings are held with staff. The
?
floors at Allison-Henderson and Comiskey were redone to get ready for classes
to be offered at those locations.
RECREATION Recreation Division Manager Pat Prevenas informed commissioners:

minutes: adult athletic numbers were up a little as far as team registrations;
Therapeutic numbers were up, mostly because a winter dance was offered for
the first time; Recreation Classes numbers look good and include a trial third
grade volleyball program; swim lesson registrations were down for fall but not
sure why; golf rounds were discussed at last meeting; Uptown numbers are
consistent except the Prescott open gym numbers are not as high as when the
program was offered at St. Patrick’s – still working at making people aware of the
new location. We are offering some new fitness classes at Audubon and
?
Prescott, encouraging families to exercise (Hi/Lo Impact Aerobics and Kids Hip

Kids Hip Hop. Golf pass sale was offered at Christmas time as usual, only 24
?
passes sold – people may be waiting to buy season passes until they see what
different golf courses are offering in the way of deals in the spring. Snack bar
?
was rented for 13 parties over the holiday season and into the next week or two;
highest number we have had so far. Word of mouth seems to be the best
reference for new rentals. Hempstead Pool opened January 7th to start the
?
winter Sunday swim season. Adult lap swim and water walking is offered from
4:00 to 5:00 p.m. and we are encouraging adults to make use of that time.

Program Supervisor Janna Beau is involved as a volunteer with the Iowa Special
Olympics being held in Dubuque.
