Dear Friends:
As we wrap up our fourth year of operation at 1 157 Central Avenue,
the Multicultural Family Center continues to grow and evolve. This
annual report shows how the number of programs offered to youth and
families have grown and how popular the cultural events have become.
This year included the hiring of the third director of the Center and
we welcome Abeni El -Amin. Abeni joins us with a great deal of non-
profit experience, cultural knowledge, and a great deal of energy and
enthusiasm to move the Center forward and work on diversity issues in
Dubuque.
Programming efforts continue to focus on teens and family programs.
Teen Nights continues to be very well attended, Future Talk leads the
summer program offers and really impacts the lives of over 20 youth,
Teen Empowerment program connects youth with weekly mentors and
educational resources, we have expanded to dance programs and other
areas that have been suggested by our users. Family Cooking and
holiday celebrations continue to be the most popular family programs
we offer. All our programs are offered at little or no cost to the
participants.
Cultural events also have expanded and include Taste of the World with
over 1,000 attending and participating, Cinco De Mayo, Juneteenth
celebration in Comiskey Park, and Marshallese Constitution Day all being
celebrated during the year. These events shows significant community
participation in celebration of cultural diversity and educates the
community on the members of the Dubuque community that have joined
us from other cultures.
The staff and board of directors continue to be impressed by the
community's support for and desire to celebrate Dubuque's cultural
diversity. We invite you to view this annual report to learn more about
the mission of the Multicultural Family Center and to become more
familiar with the programs and cultural events that we continue to offer.
We invite you to come to the Center for a tour and discuss how you can
become involved.
With sincere gratitude,
Gil Spence
Chair

EMPHASIS ON SERVING FAMILY
The MFC emphasizes the importance of
spending time and learning together as
a family. Here is a look at some of our
monthly family programs:
• Family Reading Night — families with children
in K -5th grades enjoy this themed evening
of reading and literacy activities. Dinner is
provided and each youth takes home a book to
add to their library.
• Family Cooking Class— families learn to
cook a meal together and eat it during class.
Each month has a new health objective and
emphasizes the importance of family meals.
• Mother's Day Celebration —moms, grandmas,
aunts and /or special women and the children
in their lives enjoyed brunch and a day of
pampering
• Just Desserts —this program celebrates
different desserts from around the world while
learning about each featured country
• Movies in Comiskey Park — (partnership
with Mindframe Theater and City of Dubuque)
featured monthly popular family movies
outdoors in Comiskey Park for all community
members during June, July and August
• Music in Jackson Park — (partnership with
Washington Neighbors and City of Dubuque)
families celebrated summer with the Main
Street Jazz Band, food and children's activities
July in Jackson Park
• Better Together Dubuque Family Event
This event provided the Multicultural Family
Center's LGBT+ youth network an opportunity to
bring together family /friends to celebrate their
identity in a fun, safe, and friendly setting. It
was open to all families and individuals and
provided the MFC an opportunity to educate
the community on topics of sexual orientation
and gender identity. The event was held at
the Grand River Center in partnership with
McGraw -Hill and City of Dubuque.
"The MFC is a great place for my
family. In the past, my older children
participated in several teen programs,
and Aurora and Lestat love to come
to the center for programs and the
computers."

PROGRAMMING
The MFC places priority on providing teen
programming, because in the Dubuque
community, like many others, there is a
gap in services provided for youth in 6th -
12th grades. In addition to having Teen
Night every Wednesday from 5:30 -7pm
where teens can gather with their peers
and caring adults, the MFC provided a
variety of educational, environmental, and
service - oriented programs.
Teen Empowerment Program (TEP) supports high
school students by providing one -on -one weekly
mentoring, monthly group service projects, and
monthly educational sessions. If youth achieve all
of the requirements of the program, they receive a
monthly stipend.
Road to Success: this popular event provided teens
with useful employment skills including a resume
building workshop, professional appearance advice,
leadership development and mock interviews with
several Dubuque professionals
College visits: Capri College, University of
Wisconsin - Platteville, Loras College, University of
Dubuque, Clarke University
Service projects: Dubuque Regional Humane
Society, Swiss Valley, Mines of Spain, Dubuque
Rescue Mission
Social events: movies, hockey games, bowling, ice
skating, roller skating
Future Talk is a summer environmental service - learning
program for youth ages 13 -17 that focuses on education,
service - learning, and volunteerism. We completed our sixth
year of Future Talk in August 2013. Service learning sites
included Mines of Spain, Swiss Valley, City of Dubuque
Parks, and Kaufmann Prairie. Participating youth are able
to earn one high school credit, as well as a stipend for
this program. This year's sponsors include: Prudential and
Alliant Energy Foundation.
Other teen programs held at the MFC include:
• Achieving Maximum Potential (AMP) —
monthly youth group for kids in foster care
(partnership with Community Circle of Care)
• LGBT+ Youth Network— weekly meetings for
youth who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual,
transgender, or other sexual orientation or
gender identity
"I love to come to the Multicultural
Family Center because they provide
me with a wonderful mentor /tutor
for homework and they have many
opportunities to learn about differen
cultures, and taste different food
from around the world."
