Whereas, autism is a complex neurological disorder affecting the functioning of the brain; currently a
cause and cure for autism (also known as autism Spectrum Disorders or ASDs) has not
been found; and
Whereas, today officials estimate 1 in every 88 individuals are diagnosed with autism, up from 1 in
every 500 just a few years ago, autism is the fastest growing serious developmental
disability in the USA and the world; and
Whereas, although a cure for autism has not yet been discovered, people with autism can reach their
greatest potential through accurate early diagnosis, proper medical treatments and
educational services which are all vitally important to the future development of individuals;
and
Whereas, family members, support groups and medical and educational professionals all have
dedicated years of service in their ongoing efforts to advocate for the rights and services for
all people with autism also including higher education, independent living and meaningful
employment and;
Whereas, these groups remain committed to their cause, committed to providing information to the
general public to better understand this lifelong disability and the challenges individuals and
their families face each day, and committed to increased medical research that can unlock
tomorrow's breakthroughs to one day find a cure and further detection and;
Whereas, citizens of the city of Dubuque recognize that all Americans should have the chance to live
full, independent lives and follow their talents wherever they lead.
NOW, THEREFORE, 1, ROY D. BUOL, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, ON BEHALF OF THE
CITY COUNCIL, STAFF AND CITIZENS OF DUBUQUE, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM THE MONTH OF
APRIL, 2014 AS
"AUTISM AWARENESS MONTH"
IN THE CITY OF DUBUQUE, IOWA, TO BE RECOGNIZED IN CONJUNCTION WITH WORLD
AUTISM AWARENESS DAY ON APRIL 2, 2014.
IN WITNESS THEREOF, I have hereunto set my
hand and caused the Great Seal of the City of
Dubuque to be affixed this 17th day of March, 2014.
